Hey! What are you guys doing for your grooms cake?! The last 3 weddings we have gone to they didn’t do them, is it still a thing? Cause I still plan on doing it for my FH!

My groom picked this out! Based off his favorite whiskey.
we live in Texas and didn’t realize it was a southern thing till now! Lol

There has been a groom's cake at every wedding I've ever attended! lol Knowing my guy, he'll definitely go for a Dallas Cowboys themed cake. I've also seen homemade cakes in the groom's favorite flavor. My niece wanted to have an armadillo cake for her husband -- it's his favorite animal, but they decided against it at the last minute -- that would have been hilarious! The cake flavor would have been red velvet...imagine that.

Where I am from it is common to have the Groom's cake at the rehearsal dinner. I believe the tradition started because it was supposed to be the last cake that the Groom's mother made for him.

I opted to use a bakery to make ours! It will be an Ohio State logo with buckeyes around it. FH has no idea as it's not a custom where he's from, so I can't wait to surprise him Smiley smile

From Texas and we do grooms cakes! Traditionally it is supposed to be German chocolate; therefore, we are doing German chocolate, but with the Philly Eagles theme! Our wedding colors are based on our favorite NFL team so it will fit right in!

Funnily enough based on these comments, the only wedding I've been to that had a groom's cake (that I can remember) was in Massachusetts.

We are getting married in the South and the baker (lol...Publix) advertised them in the catalog, but we aren't doing one. It's another one of those wedding things that seems kind of sexist to me - the main wedding cake isn't "mine", it's ours, so it IS his cake. But my FH likes chocolate and our cake is vanilla, so maybe I'll get him a slice of cake the night before or something.

We are having one at ours. His is baseball themed with accents of his favorite MLB Team. This also gives the guests a choice of 2 different flavors of cake.

We're doing a groom's cake, but only because my fiance has a dairy allergy and won't be able to eat the main wedding cake. He was very adamant everyone else should have a dairy-cake and is excited to have a dairy-free cake all to himself.

If it weren't for his allergy I wouldn't do it at all, it's not really a thing where we are (northeast US).

I really wanted to do a Groom's cake for my FH because I found a recipe for one in my grandmother's old book and thought it would be a nice surprise. But he is insisting he doesn't want one and rather than 'surprise him anyway' I'm just skipping it. He's happy with just the wedding cake and the food, and we'll save a little money by not having it. My amazing FH wanted nine flavors of cake. Yes, nine flavors. He had never heard of grooms cake but was excited about the possibility. We're having 2 tier wedding cake and 4 6" satellites, each a different flavor. He asked if he could have pie or cookies instead. I reminded him that it's his wedding too and he could have anything he wanted. Now he wants 5 types of pie. Lol. He has a huge family, 7 siblings, so everyone will get something they like.

So I'm not sure if I've ever been to a wedding that had a groom's cake, but I knew about them! We are doing a 3-tier wedding cake and then having a "grooms" cake that is Gluten Free. Some of our family and one of the groomsmen have Celiac so it's impossible for them to have the wedding cake without getting very sick.

I'm ALSO planning on doing a birthday cake the night before (very small since we are having pie too) to celebrate his birthday. He made a comment, last year, how his birthday hasn't been a big deal since he was in high school and this year he turns 31 while we are on our honeymoon 4 days after the wedding. So I want to surprise him and have everyone sing to him at the rehearsal!

They are still a thing here in the south. We're doing his favorite football team.
