Groom's Cake - Yay or Nay?

And if so, RD or reception? FH mentioned having one and when I looked them up it seems the jury is out when (if you have one at all) you serve it - reception or RD. In our case, we already have ordered a wedding cake for the reception that will serve everyone there, so if we do the reception it...

In our case, we already have ordered a wedding cake for the reception that will serve everyone there, so if we do the reception it would be another cake choice.

I plan to surprise FH with one at he rehearsal dinner. We are seriously considering not having cake at the reception (we both like the idea of having an excuse to serve 25 pies) but he really likes a Brazilian cake recipe that I make. There is no way I'm trying to make my wedding cake for a million different reasons, but I have decorated wedding cakes before, and am comfortable with my ability to do this in a way that he will like without selling a kidney to pay for it.

I asked my FH if he was interested in such a thing, and he declined. Our rehearsal dinner includes dessert - creme brule, which is our favorite.

I am having a surprise one made with my FHs love of motorcycle racing as the theme. It will be at the reception and will be a completely different flavor from the cupcakes. I am originally from the South so it is a completely normal thing to do where I am from. Also, we are only having 1 large cupcake pp, so I figured this way if someone wants more sweets they can always have his cake too.

ETA: added words I left out.

Yay at the reception. I'll probably get some to go bags in case we have a lot left over.

I think groom's cakes are overkill.

Grooms cakes remind me of Steel Magnolias. Just don't have it armadillo shaped.

I vote nay. I mean, you do you, but I think it implies the groom needs something of his own. The wedding is for both of you, and so is the wedding cake. Pick a cake you both like - marriage is a compromise, so is a cake. I swear they make up traditions to get more money out of people.

I've never heard of them at the rehearsal dinner. At that point it's just dessert. You want to do that, go for it.

Technically, the wedding cake is the bride's cake. In the Victorian England tradition, both the bride's and groom's cake were to be served at the reception. The American South retains this custom more than other regions. It is in no way new or a product of the wedding industrial complex.

FH doesn't want a grooms cake. He would rather have pizza.

I am from the Northeast (New York)... never ever heard of a grooms cake until I moved to Texas. I think its a southern thing ... we won't have one at our wedding.

I had never heard of a grooms cake until I joined ww. Are they a regional thing? I'm honestly curious.

We are doing one at the "rehersal" dinner. Which really isn't a rehearsal dinner, since we have no attendants. However, we are hosting dinner the night before for our out of town guests. I am know for my baking, so I will be making my FH's favorite cake, chocolate peanut butter.

A Groom's cake is very traditional Southern. Have one at the rehearsal dinner. That will be dessert for 2 nights.

FH wants one.... and a fun fetti one with rainbow chip frosting, nonetheless. I asked if RD would be okay and he said "no I want it on MY wedding day after my dinner." It's the only thing he's been adamant about for the reception, so he will get his stupid fun fetti cake with rainbow chip frosting to enjoy after his dinner. *insert eye roll emoji here*
