Groom's Cake - Yay or Nay?

And if so, RD or reception? FH mentioned having one and when I looked them up it seems the jury is out when (if you have one at all) you serve it - reception or RD. In our case, we already have ordered a wedding cake for the reception that will serve everyone there, so if we do the reception it...

In our case, we already have ordered a wedding cake for the reception that will serve everyone there, so if we do the reception it would be another cake choice.

I just asked FH if he wanted. His typical answer...what's a groom's cake? We don't even need one cake why would you get two? Lol.

If you do one, I think they're served at the reception. I think they are nice because it brings a little of his personality into a wedding. My best friend surprised her husband with a cake of his car. He's a car guy. He was sooooo happy.

I'm doing one as a surprise to my FH, it's not necessarily needed or necessary but a little detail I wanted to surprise him with- custom cake wasn't too pricey so why not? It will look like a hockey puck and designed as one of his/our favorite hockey team (we go to a ton of games together)

We aren't exactly doing a groom's cake, but we will have a second cake. We didn't want to order cake for 100 and have tons leftover, so we ordered for our expected 70 and will order a second single tier cake to accommodate extra people. We also need a second cake with a different filling, my aunt is very allergic to the raspberry filling in our wedding cake.

It makes sense for FH and I because we have different tastes. Seriously. Chances are if I like it he doesn't and vise versa. He chose a 2 tier king cake (basically a big ass cinnamon bun). People go apeshit for king cakes here so we're expecting most people will have a slice of both the cake and the groom's cake.

Usually done at the reception. I love the idea of one, but we aren't going to have one at our wedding. FH has zero desire to do so, even though we originally picked out a bad ass Death Star cake.

We aren't doing one, but I decided to surprise FH and have the baker make the layer we're cutting into with a "Vols checkerboard". That way our cake has a little bit of him too.

We're doing one for rehearsal dinner. FH really wanted lemon cake with blueberry preserve filling. I thought we'd need flavors that may be like by all for the wedding cake. So we compromised and doing the flavor he wants the night before.

FH and I went to cake tasting together and the layers of the wedding cake will consist of a flavor he liked (but I didn't) and a flavor we both liked. I figured since he hasn't asked for much during the process (he picked two table clothes he liked, two dishes for the buffet he liked and his cake flavor - everything else he has said whatever you want) I am planning around whatever he decides is important to him. So he already has a layer of the wedding cake in his flavor, if we got a grooms cake as well it would be the same flavor so we don't have to worry about guests liking that one better per say. Part of the reason I was thinking maybe RD since it would be same flavor as one of the layers - just decorated differently.

@Celia, that would be the next decision - he will have to figure out what he would like it to be. Smiley smile

We're not having one. We are keeping it simple and just serving one cake

Skipping the grooms cake! Rather spend the money elsewhere and he's not into sweets anyway. It's a personal decision.

I'm doing one! They're definitely more popular in the south. While I don't live in the south, I grew up there and am used to it. I was going to skip it and FH doesn't know about it, but I think it will be a nice touch. I thought about doing FH's favorite sports team, but he's not from the US, so I'm doing his birth country's national soccer team's logo. It's a nice way to honor his heritage, his family, and something he loves. We're just doing a small one, so it's only adding $50 to our cake total.

I'm obviously super far away from my wedding next year, but FH loves the Mets and loves guava cake (he's said we can't have guava cake as our wedding cake, but I'm more traditional lol) so I was toying with the idea of getting him a mets-themed guava cake for the rehearsal dinner. It would be a fun surprise for him!

C&N - Oh my gosh!!!! SIL did this and her (now) husband was blown away! Only the groom's mom was able to make it from Costa Rica for their wedding, and SIL ordered him a groom's cake with the Saprissa logo on it and he loved it so much. It was such a sweet personal touch and he almost didn't let anyone eat it Smiley smile I love that you're doing this!!!

@WWLynnie - thanks for the story, it definitely helps reassure my decision! Only FH's parents are coming from overseas, and it's a big part of bonding with his dad and he's so proud when watching them play. He said he didn't want one, but I hope he loves it!

We talked about doing one and thank god we didn't! We had a good bit of leftover cake anyway so I can't imagine what would've happened if we had more. We also split the flavors of our cake so we had 4 tiers, 2 of each flavor.
