Groom wearing kilt for wedding?

Marissa, on May 7, 2020 at 1:35 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 20

Hey all! Just wanted to know your thoughts on a groom wearing a kilt on their wedding day. Do you think it's silly, strange, or really cool?

My FH wants to wear a kilt since he's part Scottish, and has recently just found out he's apart of a clan. He's really into his heritage right now and the only thing he asked for our wedding is that he wants to wear a kilt. (My step-dad also wear kilts all the time during festivals and my FH really looks up to him.) At first I thought no, and thought it was strange. But then thinking about it more, I want to respect my FH, and it's his wedding too, so I decided yes and now think it will look very grand/regal and whimsical. I also looked up pictures of weddings with the groom in a kilt on Pinterest and have now fallen in love with the idea!

The only thing when I mentioned this to my MOH, that he wants to wear a kilt, she started laughing and thought it would look weird, especially in photos. 😔 This really made me upset, but then thought wow, this is my wedding not hers and if that's her opinion then fine, she'll just have to deal with it!

Here's the photo from Pinterest that I love and is my inspiration 😍Groom wearing kilt for wedding? 1

I loveee it! My family is nearly 100% Irish (my fiancé is Polish) and we are doing our ceremony with the tying of the Celtic trinity knots.
Uhh your ceremony will be beautiful!!

I’m a violinist and I’ve played at several weddings where the men wore kilts.

I think that’s a pretty cool idea. There is nothing weird or strange about celebrating your culture. It’ll make your pictures more unique then the everyday suit/tux grooms pics.

I love it when guys are in kilts representing their family. Would your mom laugh at an Indian bride in a lehenga? It’s something from another person’s culture. It’s not weird or strange at all. If your fiancé isn’t used to wearing such open flowing clothing downstairs, he could have a backup suit ready to go for the reception in case he needs it. If brides can change outfits, grooms can too.

I think its fantastic to want to honor your heritage! One of my bridesmaids is getting married in Scotland this Novemember and her fiancé is wearing a kilt as well as the groomsmen. She's from England and he's from Scotland, but nonetheless its a great idea! You should absolutely go for it if its what you both want :-) its your wedding!

I think grooms should wear whatever they want just like brides do.

This, and also wearing kilts for formal occasions is a perfectly normal thing to do for people with certain kinds of Celtic heritage. I think it's weird that people might think it's weird. Especially if the main worry is how a piece of clothing will look in photos.

I think this is such a really cool idea!! I'm Scottish and Irish and this is really cool way to honor the heritage. You could if you want to have all the GMs wear one. Then it's a pack which is neat! Up to you and your FH, not anyone else. I also think that it's really cool that you said "it's his wedding too" because not many of us think that way when we are planning things to be perfect. If you and your FH like it and think it will look cool then go for it!

I definitely think you should let him wear it! It’s very nice that he wants to embrace his culture! The pictures look really and it will be unique!
Another option, is for him to wear it for the ceremony and then a tux for the reception.

For instance, my FH is military. He was indecisive on what to wear on wedding day. Finally he decided to wear his sailor uniform for the ceremony and then the tux for the reception.

There is the full formal kilt and jacket that really are attractive. It is his heritage, so I am happy to hear you support him .

I know many people who have gotten married in Kilts and it doesn’t mess anything up! If anything get the groomsmen to wear them as well!

I think it’s rad! And cool when a groom wants to do something different or celebrate his heritage. Will you be pulling in other Scottish decor elements or traditions?

Hi! Definitely the hardest struggle for me right now is caring what people think about regarding the wedding, and that is no way for us to think! This wedding is about us and celebrating the two of you before God and that is all that matters! You 100% do not care about what anyone thinks of your big day! It's not their big day and they can make their own choices at their wedding Smiley heart No one should be laughing anyways!!!!!

Why doesn’t he wear a suit for the ceremony and then have a kilt for the reception
