going to the courthouse..

randi, on May 22, 2011 at 2:03 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 10

Have any of you ladies gone to the courthouse? what is the experience like? did you and your husband walk in together? did you walk in after him? did you wear anything special? how long does it take? did you recite your own vows? in your county, are witnesses needed?

Thanks Ladies Smiley smile

I'm actually really interested to see the responses, I'm tempted to do that and then have a nice reception that everyone can come too. I'm not big on having everyone watch the ceremony, I want it to be a sweet and intimate moment between us

I went to the courthouse for my first marriage. It was quick...about 10 minutes. We didn't wear anything special, just nice jeans and a nice shirt. It wasn't like a ceremony, so we walked in together and stood at the front of the room and held hands. The judge read some stuff off the paper and we repeated the vows. We didn't have to supply our own witnesses. They always grab 2 ladies in the office to act as witnesses. We didn't even have an appointment. Just walked in and walked out. We got the marriage license first, then walked into another room for the "ceremony."

Every state does things differently. My friends got married in TX and they had a nice ceremony done outside of the courthouse. I got married at the courthouse in Brooklyn NY I wore a white summer dress my husband wore a nice shirt with a sweater and tie and nice pants. My sister best friend and mother attended and his best friend was his witness. There was huge line and lots of couples got married the whole ceremony was under 10 mins. The JOP had a very weird voice and mispronounced my husband's name even after correction. My sister and BF laughed through the whole thing and it was funny. All in all a bad experience so we are doing it over and renewing our vows

We had the legal ceremony in Texas before heading to Mexico 2 weeks later for our wedding.
We thought it was no big deal, but I noticed the day of we both dressed up and his daughter brought me flowers.
The judge was really nice, he actually sat down with us alone in his chambers and asked questions about us, how long we'd known each other, the names of our daughters etc. He mentioned some personal things during our ceremony. We had 2 witnesses, but they didn't have to sign anything. We came out together with the judge into courtroom. I actually cried during the vows, which shocked me I always thought that the Cabo wedding was the real day of our wedding. It was actually a very lovely experience. i dont to share the pics of that day very much, but I love this one, coming out the courthouse.

We were thinking about going to the courthouse before we left for Cancun too. However, when I found out the JP would travel, we decided to ask our fav winery to open early for us for a quick intimate ceremony there. That way we are also 10 mins from airtport. Smiley smile I plan on wearing a simple sundress too so that I will be comfortable on plane. Still debating on a veil! LOL I bet I would get some heads to turn.

In PA you go to the local District Justice. Since I have a friend who is a DJ we are going to him and having a ceremony there. My FH just wants the "do you take him/her" vows, but I am wearing a gown, and I may personalize my vows to him or I may just make them my toast to him at the reception.

Sharon, I love that part of your wedding story! What an awesome pic too!!!!!

    Hi Sharon-

Just found this by search. I realize it was a few years ago. I was trying to help my son, the groom decide on where to do the legal vows before the Cabo wedding. We live in Austin and I recognized the courthouse from your awesome pic! Anyway I could ask you some questions?
