Going Dress Shopping Alone

Cheyenne, on September 19, 2017 at 11:07 PM Posted in Planning 0 25

Hi all,

Has anyone gone dress shopping alone? How'd it go?

I am considering this because I tend to go shopping by myself anyways. I feel more comfortable this way. My mother, My sister, and I went dress shopping for my sister's wedding and my sister was disappointed that my mother never gave the "this is her dress" reaction like we see on say Yes to the dress shows. My mother is also the type to guilt trip and I don't want to disappoint her in any choices that I make.

I also want the experience of going shopping with my mom and wedding party BUT I'll be at college for the next 9 months and 4 hours away from everyone. It'll just be hard to get everyone together for it.

I went by myself, ordered it and when it came in took mom to pick it up. I tried it on again to show her.

Based on what you've said, I think you're making the right decision. I was very worried about opinions and chose to only go with my mom. However, my mom and I watch "say yes to the dress" together and she always feels bad when the entourage gives input to discourage the brides and she vowed to never do that to me. And she didn't. We had a wonderful time and she asked me my opinion often and did not tell me what her feeling were but supported mine.

I would have totally gone by myself! I go shopping by myself often, I do things alone often, and it would have been less of a hassle if I went alone. I went with my MOH and FMIL and then again with my mom a few months later

I also went alone, because I felt like I'd be too over whelmed with an "entourage." I narrowed it down to my two favorites and brought my MOH, mom, grandmother, and FMIL to help me "say yes to the dress" so they could be included in the moment.

Oh geez make sure they don't have a policy requiring a group to come with you. I was literally asked to leave a store because I came alone. It sucked really bad because my family was hours away and I was dealing with a dress crisis.

The other appointments I did on my own were much more relaxed and I could really focus on what I liked. I preferred dress shopping alone.

My first appointment I went alone. The second appointment I went with my mom and sister. They were very opinionated and it swayed my feelings about certain dresses I tried. I love shopping alone, and during my first appointment I got a much better sense of what I liked.

I went with a friend and then again alone. It was much better alone. I got to try on a lot more dresses during the appointment and I could make decisions without any other opinions. Once I've narrowed my choices down more I'll be going back with my best friend to show her a couple favorites and make a decision.

@mrsBdeG What store was this? That's ridiculous. Why should it matter to them if you have people with you?

Maybe go and shop alone and then possibly bring other to a fitting. Then it's a done deal and they will probably have a more positive reaction.

I went to a few with a friend, but the day I found the dress, I was alone. It was fantastic.

@FutureMrsSimmons It was called vows. They told me that ever since they require a group because random girls that weren't looking to buy would come in and just play dress up for a day.

I went to my first appointment alone and FaceTime'd with my parents. I am really glad I did that alone because my first experience putting on gowns was very overwhelming. After that, I mostly shopped with my mom. Ironically, the one appointment that I took more than two people to was the place I first tried on the dress I bought. Fewer people was better though.

@MrsBdeG - I remember that thread and am still shocked by what happened to you. Are you talking about Vows as in "I Found the Gown" Vows? Unbelievable. Who cares if people play dress up.

I love shopping alone, and while I didn't go alone for my dress shopping I would have if my Mom and friends didn't beg to come with.

@MrsBdeG: I would definitely not have shopped at a place that demanded I have an entourage. Even if I wanted others with me, I might very well want to go and narrow it down by myself first. And I buy dresses by myself all the time; why would I need to have a bunch of people with me to do so?

In my case, I brought my FI with me. But it should be up to me, not the shop, whom I'd like to have there.

Do it!!!! Go somewhere that will be helpful in finding at least the style. This will limit the amount of suggestions and opinions

I just went today all by myself. I really just wanted to see what looked good on me and what didn't, because I really had no idea what to look for in that type of dress. I am happy I did since I didn't have any pressure from outside and I could be practical. The stylist was super helpful and honest. And thankfully not pushy. Now that I have a better idea of what I am looking for, I might go with my mom and MOH, but since they're clear across the country, I might end up getting it on my own anyway so I can do it earlier.

I think those wedding shows have really screwed with people's expectations. Life is not that dramatic.

I went by myself the first time. Kind of glad the part that is supposed to go around the knees got stuck on my butt and the gal helping me and I died laughing. They told me sometimes it's good to go the first time by yourself. Im going with my mom this weekend.
