Gluten Free Guests

At least four of the guests attending our August wedding are gluten intolerant. We mentioned this to the catering company and they said it was absolutely no problem to have a gluten free plate for each of them at dinner.

My question is in regard to the cake. Our cake is not gluten free and that will be the only dessert we serve. Is it a good idea to have a small, say 8 inch cake to the side that is gluten free for them? I would never want to "single them out", but I certainly wouldn't want to leave them out of having cake, either!

Thoughts?

I am GF and the top tier of our wedding cake was GF for me and my other friend that is GF as well. I like the idea of cupcakes! Its sweet of you to accommodate those people.

a little off topic but @katy do you mind if I ask how you were finally diagnosed as Celiac? I did the blood test but I had been avoiding gluten too long for it to be positive and I don't want to do a gluten challenge.....

My initial thought was to have a specific tier on the cake be gluten free, but is that safe? I know with peanut allergies, that could be just as dangerous to have it touching like that. Is the same true for gluten?

Most people gluten free who truly tare intolerant just will pass. They are adults who can generally handle social food situations.

Gluten can be spread by contact, so tiers on one cake will not be safe enough for some people. That's why cupcakes are so appealing because they you also don't have to worry about cross contamination by the cutting utensils either.

    Eta clarity

Gluten is spread by contact which is why we had a divider, to keep the top tier from the rest. And it was the top tier so it wouldn't be contaminated by cake falling on to it, and we were the first to cut and eat it....but @Jo is right, if I have questions about the GFness of food, I just decline.

As a gf person, I can not tell you how much I appreciate it when the bride thinks of these things! When my friend got married, she got a small cake for the few of us who were gluten free, it was wonderful and so sweet of her! We are doing a tiered cake and the top will be gluten free for me and our gluten free guests. There will be risers between layers so the two cakes will not touch. I think cupcakes are a great idea, you're gf guests will greatly appreciate it!!!

I think it would be safest to ask them first. Although I don't have any food allergies, I'm not a cake or cupcake lover and always pass it up, even at weddings. Although I had one bite when my husband fed me ...

@JCloves - I was diagnosed with a blood test seven years after a negative biopsy. The doctors insisted that I couldn't possibly have Celiac Disease if I had tested negative with a biopsy, but I think they now know more and realize that it can happen. The first test was super early into my symptoms. I probably didn't have enough damage for it to be detected. They finally tested me again when I just kept getting sicker and it was positive. I think if eating gluten free makes you feel better though, just do it. A gluten challenge sounds awful!

    Let them eat cake!

I have several gluten free guests. Since we're doing donuts & cupcakes, we ordered a couple dozen cupcakes in gluten free. We might also make our cutting cake gluten free depending on what baker we end up with.

I agree cupcakes are probably the way to go. The fact that they don't have to be cut is a big benefit as it avoids the risk of cross contamination.

Then I would put them on a plate/stand that says they are for the gluten free guests otherwise you will have others grabbing them and you will have non left over for those who need them.

4 guests? They're gluten intolerant. Trust me, they are used to not being able to eat dessert. This is nothing to worry about. You are very thoughtful, I can tell you this would've never crossed my mind

I would do cupcakes. They are easy and simple to eat. Plus they would probably cost less then buying a cake.

I have multiple fairly strange allergies (dairy, walnuts, almonds, stone fruits, pineapple, apples), and I'm all about food. I completely understand when someone can't cook for me, but it's also kind of the saddest thing ever when I'm at an event where everyone's having dessert and I'm sitting there like... there's nothing I can eat... so I'm always super happy and grateful when someone takes the time to provide something I can eat, and I make a point to do my level best to accommodate other people's dietary restrictions.

Tl;dr: I agree with people suggesting cupcakes, and to those who asked if one would provide a special cake for people allergic to dairy/whatever else: yes, of course I would do my level best, and I do believe every Jewish cookbook in my house is flabbergasted you would think it's even a question.

I think the idea of ordering a little cake or some cupcakes for these guests is great! FH's little cousin has to eat gluten free and dairy free, so we are having a special cupcake made for her. Smiley smile

We are doing 6 vegan/GF cupcakes to take care of 3 friends/family members who are GF. Caterer is providing them a special plate that is GF and he is doing two special plates for our two Vegan friends too. They were more than happy to accommodate. I agree with everyone else, cupcakes is better than a full cake.
