Gf/df Cake Options

Elizabeth, on April 26, 2021 at 5:00 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 11

I am getting married in September, but my cake baker recently told me she is moving to Scotland a couple weeks before my wedding, so I am trying to improvise. I have a dairy and gluten allergy, so the plan was to have a small two-tier cutting cake and have a large sheet cake for our guests. I can't find another gluten free/dairy free baker in the area, but I have found a couple different options that I would like feedback on.

1. Gluten free/dairy free cupcakes. I can buy these frozen and thaw them out a couple hours before the wedding.

2. Mason jar cakes. I was thinking I could either buy these already made or try to make them myself. I'm a little worried about making them myself because they might be dry. If you've made your own gluten free/dairy free mason jar cakes, please let me know how they turned out!

3. Cake "push pops". I think these are cute and creative, but I don't know if they would be too messy.

If you've tried any of these or have any other suggestions, please let me know!

Can your caterer make a custom cake? Depending on the venue, they likely will not allow homemade food. Frozen/thawed cakes are not appetizing.

Unfortunately, my caterer doesn't make cakes, so the only option is to bring my own or have it delivered by someone else

Ask the baker if she knows of anyone else in the area she recommends. Most venues require a licensed food vendor for safety and liability.

Are you planning to do GF/DF for everyone? If you just need it for your dessert, then Whole Foods may have options for a cute cutting cake (they have different local brands depending on where you are at). Otherwise the frozen cupcakes aren’t bad.
I would still do a normal sheet cake for the rest of the guests (like Costco or Sam’s), and keep the allergen-free options for only those who need it.

Where are you located? If you are in New England, Hippie Chick bakery in NH is great and could definitely accommodate dietary restrictions We are getting a vegan cake from her.

I have ordered mason jar cakes from Whimxical Wonders on Etsy that were really good and stayed moist. I’m not sure if she does gluten free but definitely does dairy free.

Oh! And Dee’s One Smart Cookie in CT.
Maybe these places have out of state contacts?

We are still planning to have a sheet cake for people that are not gluten/dairy free, so I'm estimating we'll be serving about 12 gluten free. We don't have a Whole Foods in the area, but I can check at our other local health food stores

I'm located in Iowa. I looked on their website and saw that they can fly to my location to make the cake, but it would cost 2 plane tickets and 2 days at a hotel. Yikes! Their menu looks great though!

Hey I have gluten and dairy allergies too! Lol. I was super adamant about being able to eat everything at my wedding, I think doing cupcakes is fine!

I totally understand! I've pretty much given up on expecting to eat everything at my wedding, but I for sure want to make sure I can eat some cake!
