Gender Neutral Wedding Party Outfits

Alexis, on March 8, 2019 at 11:31 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 15

Good Morning!

Does anyone have any suggestions or experience with gender neutral wedding party outfits?

I am inquiring about options for those adorable "getting ready" photos and also for the wedding itself. We are doing couples on each of our sides. One of the couples is two women, one of which who would not feel comfortable in a dress. I want to have options/ideas available so that I don't jumble the wording, or not know how to express that I want her to feel comfortable (but not excluded).

I really love those beautiful robes I see so many girls wearing in their getting ready photos but is there some other option that might make everyone feel more comfortable and unified? And do you have any suggestions for alternatives to bridesmaid dresses? I am open to discussing the option of a suit with her, but I am not sure that's really her style either. So do you have any other recommendations or pictures?

Thank you in advance!

We are a same sex couple and we will have mixed genders on either side. I also have one bridesmaid who won't wear a dress and neither will my FW, so I'm kind of on the same page. Instead of the getting ready robes, we're going to do matching pajamas, we might just do flannel pants and have everyone wear a matching colored shirt, we haven't really thought out the details yet. That might be a good option for you since you're having a winter wedding.

As far as attire for the actual wedding, I would just discuss with her what she's most comfortable in. We aren't doing suits, but my FW, the guys, and my one not-so-feminine bridesmaid are all wearing dress pants, button ups, and suspenders. We would have been more than willing to change things up if anyone was uncomfortable with what we'd picked. I'm sure that she will appreciate you asking for her preferences and I wouldn't think that it would be an awkward conversation, assuming you guys are close since she's in your bridal party.

I would do Pjs for the getting ready pics! I wish I thought of this before I bought all of the robes lol.

I would pick a color, fabric & length and let the women choose their outfits from there. That way some can wear dresses, some can wear pant suits, and some can wear rompers or whatever else they feel best in. For getting ready outfits, I picked 3 (cotton waffle robe, romper, long PJ shirt) all black and let the girls pick their own from there. So we will still all look cute & matching but they wear something they are comfortable in.

Do you have pictures of those options? I would love to see them!

And I agree, I just intend to purchase everything so I'm a little worried about giving everyone completely free reign. I've seen some pretty expensive jumpsuits lol.

PJs are a great idea. I can't believe I didn't think of that. Thank you! I'm sure your robes will look beautiful, I really love those.

That's awesome you are purchasing their outfits! Well maybe do what I did for getting ready outfits, and come up with a few options? I went with Azazie, because my bridesmaids had over 100 options for their dress. You could pick a few long dresses, a few pant suits, a few jumpsuits, a few skirt & shirt options?

    Romper Option

    PJ Shirt Option

Thank you very much for your insight Caytlyn. i see everyone else thought of pjs except for me LOL! that is a really good suggestion.

I saw some of the suspenders ideas and I did find that cute, I just don't want her to feel singled out. She is my future SIL's wife. She wore an incredible pantsuit to her own wedding and so I know that something along those lines would moreso be her preference. I just wanted to have some options at the ready because she is so kind and accommodating, I fear she will not present alternatives and just say she will do whatever I want. Thank you for giving me some clarity and peace of mind.

I wouldn't be too concerned about her feeling singled out. She knows that her preferences aren't "normal" and I'm sure that she'll just be appreciative that you're actually asking what would make her feel comfortable. Not everyone is as accommodating. It's very kind of you!

It might just be my work browser, but I wasn't able to get the Etsy links to work. I had never heard of Azazie before, this is amazing! Thank you so much!

Do those links work? You could always do flannels since your wedding is during the winter, those are way more gender neutral!

They did! Excellent! Those are all so beautiful! I especially love the sleep shirts, how cozy!! Sorry for putting you through all of that extra effort.

Flannels are adorable, but we are in Florida and so I'm not going too heavy on the wintery theme. So I think these are some excellent choices!!

Instead of a dress you could suggest a jumpsuit, something like this https://www.davidsbridal.com/Product_tie-back-crinkle-chiffon-bridesmaid-jumpsuit-f19741

Last wedding I was in the MOH got us all oversize tunic length button down shirts. The mom's had plaid, bride had white, and we had chambray (light blue) and we all just wore whatever we wanted on the bottom (most of us had on yoga pants). Maybe that would work?

For the wedding outfit I would probably just pick a color and let the party pick out there own outfits. So if they don't want to wear a dress or suit, they could maybe wear nice black slacks and a fancy black top or make sure to wear a black blazer (if your color is black, but you get my drift).

Those who want to wear dresses can, those who want to wear suits can, but as long as they coordinate they could easily wear whatever they want

We have all forms of genders on the groom’s side and the majority of my girls are not heterosexual. We decided it would be best to do a “bridal brigade” and a “groom’s guild” so the maid and man are slashed away. As for attire, my girls all wear dresses so we’re doing burgundy for them and gray for FH’s side that way if they want a suit or a dress or a blend they can and still look like part of his party. The girls on his side will have pin on corsages while the men wear boutonnières and my girls have bridal bouquets. For morning of- button up night shirts!!!

As far as getting ready outfits, another gender neutral option is just getting t-shirts and asking everyone to wear bottoms of their choosing. My bridesmaids are all feminine-dressing females, and I plan to get them off the shoulder t-shirts and ask them to wear black leggings (I have personally seen them all wear black leggings but I would be happy to buy them a cheap pair if that's an issue at all). You could get regular t-shirts for anyone who would prefer that, as long as the opening is fairly large so that it could fit over their heads without an issue (which only matters if they're getting hair and/or makeup done...if someone has a buzz cut or something, this may not matter).

For the wedding outfits, you could try finding a few options you like such as a dress, pants suit, full suit, etc. and send them the options. Also let them know that you can find other options if those don't suit their preferences. I would just be open and honest that you want everyone to feel totally comfortable with whatever they're wearing, but this way it won't give them complete free reign so your budget can be kept in mind. Another option is to let them choose their outfit with only direction on the color, and tell them that you'll cover anything up to X dollar amount. So they can find something within that range, or cover the difference if it happens to be more.
