Geek centerpieces?

Maria, on March 20, 2011 at 5:37 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 18

I am so frustrated with centerpieces, I'm ready to rip my hair out.

Our wedding is "geek-themed," like Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, Harry Potter, video games, etc. etc., and I really want to incorporate that theme into the centerpieces, but I'm at a creative roadblock. I've thought about candles/silhouettes of our favorite characters, doing photoshop pictures, having candy, flowers, candles, but everything is either super cheesy or is way out of our price range (our budget is exceptionally small).

Please, any suggestions would be very welcome.

How about stacking books on the tables and maybe adding some few flowers or a candle.

How about board game pieces in votive candle holders? Or maybe you can get action figures of some of your favorite geek movies and set them up as if they are 'fighting'.

What if each table were a different theme....include the book, an action figure, and votives.

If you are geeks already- what do you have around the house? Do you know someone with some geeky collectibles? Why not use a replica of the Enterprise? Or Star Wars action figures? What about a red stapler and/or smashed printer? Darth Vader helmets? Video Game controllers? Computer keyboards?

I would also suggest checking out thinkgeek.com

I'll have to pull up my other geek sites and get some ideas.

And of course, you have to walk down the aisle to the Imperial Death March, and enter the recpetion to the Cantina Band. You could do the Mario Bros. music as well.

And if you need ideas for cake toppers- do a white Wii controller and black XBox controller. Or Mario and the Princess.

    Legos.

    Rubix Cubes

And if you cut the cake (or destroyed it) with a light saber... well, that would be awesome!

Woah, I just opened up my email, and I'm so excited at all the responses! Thank you EVERYONE!

When I was leaning towards the silhouette ideas, I made a list of 9 geek categories (one for each reception table): Star Wars, Star Trek, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, epic films (i.e. POTC, Indiana Jones, etc.), comics (i.e. Spiderman), old school games (i.e. Pacman), childhood cartoons (Transformers, ghostbusters, thundercats, TMNT), and sci-fi series (Stargate, BSG, Dr. Who, Firefly, etc.).

Browsing around on ThinkGeek site, I really like their coasters and mugs. I bet I could do something creative with that... I know these are all copyrighted, but as long as I'm not selling the images, would it still be okay to use them?

Thank you all so much. Your ideas have rejuvenated my enthusiasm!

Oh, and one more thought... I'm hesitant to use the action figures and models we have. Aren't guests supposed to bring the centerpieces home? I definitely have no experience in this area, but I get the feeling it would be a faux pas to have a little note that says "these centerpieces belong to the bride and groom" or am I just being paranoid?

Simple idea... Get some of the clear plastic picture holder stand thing. Print the picture in color on transperancy paper. If you can make it work- make it like a giant pocket protector.

You can decorate the base of the table with stupid stuff- instead of confetti, do keyboard keys (garage sales!).

You could just do comic books in sleeves- or pages of a comic book (print them, don't destroy real ones. People will cry).

I love the Pac Man and Mrs. Pac Man idea- great cake toppers! Use ghosts climbing up the tiers to decorate...

What if you got vases and took comic books and used modge podge to put pages on around the outside of the vases and then have the wedding flowers set in the vases with computer parts or mini eye glasses and pieces of things like that stuck in the flowers and then scatter legos or little action figures you could watch craigslist in the free section for free computers that or broken to use for parts or even use key board keys around the vases and spell out differnt games and movies and thing on each table, good luck I am curious as to what you come up with and would love to see pics!!

Maria, I love the idea of making the centerpieces your own! No, it's not paranoid to expect people to leave them there. A small note at each table letting people know. "Enjoy our toys at the reception, but please leave them on the table at the end of the evening."

People shouldn't be taking centerpieces without asking anyway. That's just rude.

If you look at the pic Michelle posted- I love the idea of question mark boxes- with a large flower coming out of them! Super cute, and simple.

    Centerpieces are finally finished!!!!

They go along with our theme of "Our big fat geek wedding." I made coasters with eight geek themes (for eight tables), and if you look at the first picture, they're ordered in rows according to theme. Then in the second picture, each table will get a lantern with six coasters in a circle around the lantern (which will have an electric candle in it, but they haven't arrived yet). What do you think? I hope guests aren't too critical 'cause I worked really hard on them!

Thank you all again for your most helpful suggestions!
