From boyfriend to fiance to husband

Coco, on January 8, 2016 at 7:28 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 49

Did anyone struggle sometimes or slip up a lot in the beginning of your engagement and say boyfriend still and then even after being married sometimes say fiance still or did it all come naturally?

I mess up in my head sometimes, but have always managed to say the right thing out loud. It's been weird for me because we went from dating to engaged to married in 10 months. I found fiancé felt really weird to say at first. husband actually feels more natural.

Definitely. It's funny because FH will be like "My girl... (Insert obnoxious throat clear from me) my bad, my fiancée." Lol!

I have such trouble saying fiance. Not because I don't want to, it's just because maybe it's fresh? I will be talking to my friends and say my boyfriend, then they'll interrupt and say oh you mean your fiancé? When did it start rolling off the tongue for you? ETA: For clarification

SoonToBe: FH will refer to me as his "old lady" lol. We were out one night and he called me his gf. I was like uh no I'm not. He was like oh yeah I don't have a gf anymore lol

We've been engaged almost five months, and I slipped for the first time just the other day. I was in the middle of a heated story and I called him boyfriend. What's funny is I didn't even catch it, the girl I was talking to corrected me. I think she was just trying to distract me from what I was upset about lol

That came pretty naturally. Some of the other small habits are hard to break though. For example, shortly after we got engaged FH said I could borrow something but I had to return it whenever I was done with it. Jokingly, I told him no. He started to argue and I said fine I'll bring it back when we move in together. Then he realized how silly it was and we laughed about it.

I've always hated the term boyfriend because there's this sense of.. Unimportance when someone is just a boyfriend/girlfriend. Other people don't take someone's S.O. seriously when they're just a bf/gf. Mini rant over.

It's weird for us because we are saving to get married, but can't do anything serious until I graduate in a few months and he wants to "do it right" and get me a ring so we haven't told anyone outside of our very close friends that we are even engaged, so I still have to call my fiancé my boyfriend because people will freak I think.

Yep, we both have slipped up a few times. Because we've been together for so long, we actually have a lot of people already referring to us as husband or wife, which we've been correcting less and less as we get closer to that actually being true.

I actually find the word fiance weird to say, so I avoid it. I usually just say his name to replace it. I feel like husband will feel more normal.

Bryce, I totally understand that. Everyone knows but not a lot of people truly agree or are happy about it. So some of my family members, sadly my grandmother, doesn't want to hear me call him my fiancé or think of the wedding planning even..

I find myself still saying boyfriend, it feels more natural to say than fiance...Maybe because I've called him my boyfriend for almost 5 years and fiance for only a month.

@Jersey Jen same! I don't like the word, I hate when I have to use it when I'm talking to someone who wouldn't know who he was if I referred to him by name.

Bryce I totally get that! The second u get engaged everyone wants to see "the ring" I can see that being awkward like well... They don't know the commitment u two have already made to each other.

Coco, it sucks. FH called his dad (his family is in Cali) and explained to him that we are planning on getting married and he's almost done paying off a ring. So FH's dad translated it to "he is thinking about maybe looking at a ring to possibly propose." And FH had to be like "no. it's happening already"

So we are laying low until there's a ring, because we know people might not take it seriously until then. Ugh.

FH actually skips over fiancee and has started calling me his wife already. I always correct him and say he can't call me his wife before we're married. But he doesn't like the word fiance(e) either.

@Jersey It is, isn't it? I like saying it but I don't? I don't know. Such an odd word and feeling when I say it.
