Food poisoning at potential reception venue???

on June 12, 2019 at 12:18 AM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 10
Hello all! My fiancé and I are trying to decide between two venues for our reception for our December wedding, as our old one burned down a week ago!

1) banquet hall (we are not banquet hall people AT ALL). On Saturday, just under $19k for 170 guests. You get unlimited passed hors douevres, a soup, a salad, sorbet, entree, wedding cake, sweets table, late night snack plus 5 hours of premium open bar and wine service at dinner. There will be a corporate holiday happening in the room right next to us. Everything is all in the same room (cocktail hour and reception), there’s no outdoor space. Beautiful but just not us.

2)Venue that has separate space for cocktail hour and reception. Has an outdoor balcony with heat lamps included. On Friday for $22.5k. Has 3 passed hors doueveres, salad, entree, wedding cake, late night snack. 4 hours of standard open bar and wine service at dinner. TOTALLY our style and GORGEOUS venue. But I was digging into old reviews and saw that 2 years ago multiple reviews reported 80/200 person wedding god food poisoning at the wedding. Most reviews are very positive. Other negative reviews were bashing a coordinator that no longer works there.

I’ve been struggling with finding a new venue because we wanted something that looks like our old venue SO BADLY, but should we take the risk???

I feel like if they were all several years ago within a specific span of time, you're probably OK.

I would take it as them probably amping up their service and being more careful about how they prepare food. It is recent enough that they may have improved to avoid the incident again.

I don't think it's a risk at all. If it was 2 years ago, and no complaints since.

Heck, I think an outdoor space in December in Chicago sounds way riskier.

I agree. Two years ago is probably fine. A lot of turnout in a year and they’re gonna work hard to not get another review like that.

How do your family & friends feel about a Friday wedding? If everyone is ok with it then I would probably opt for #2 since it is totally you, assuming you are ok with the extra $3,500! Otherwise go with #1 and enjoy it & add your own personal touches!

I don't think it's a risk to book the second place. It was two years ago and no reports since? Sounds like they found the issue and handled it. It might not have even been their fault if the problem originated with one of their suppliers.

You say the second one is totally your style. I say you should go for it!

I think it'll be ok. If it was recent like within the year I'd be worried but that long ago I think is ok.

Have you looked at other options other than these 2? I'd vote 1 especially since it's on a Saturday. But if you go 1, I'd pick a food that is harder to undercook like beef maybe?

It was actually 3 years ago! No issues since! We checked with our VIPs and a Friday wedding should be fine! I just can’t get over the feeling it gave us
