flying my DJ to my destination wedding

Kristyn, on August 30, 2016 at 12:55 AM Posted in Planning 0 28

I am having a destination wedding and I am thinking of flying down a trusted DJ/ friend.

With airfare, hotel, and all other accommodations, it's going to be around $7000.

A friend of mine paid $10,000 for her DJ and her wedding was not destination.

Am I out of my mind?

Does this sound extreme?

No need to rip me to shreds, I'm just asking a question. Before you answer, keep in mind that I'm brand new to this, just got engaged, and never planned a wedding in my life.

I have no idea what anything costs pertaining to weddings. In my head, entertainment is second most important thing at a wedding, first being food.

Its a bad idea to hire a friend for your wedding.

Personally I think paying 7k for a dj is also crazy....

Does the venue you're having your wedding at suggest or include a DJ? Why this person? We typically advise against friendors.

$7000 is, to me, a ridiculous amount to pay for a DJ. I can't even imagine $10,000 which is like my entire budget.

Also when you get a minute, change your avatar so we don't think you're a troll or fake. It'll help you get more responses.

Omg. I just booked another friend to do my hair. No friends??? I didn't know this rule. I wish I would have asked questions sooner!

Are these friends professionals at what you hired them to do? Do you have contracts with them? Would you be inviting them to the wedding as guests if you hadn't hired them? I do think $7k is a bit much for a DJ regardless.

$7k is an insane amount of money for a DJ. I mean, unless you have a pretty large budget. Then, spend away!

But yes, do everything formally. Contracts, payment, etc.

I never in my wildest dreams would have imagined paying $7000 for a DJ, let alone $10K (destination or not.) But if you have the kind of budget where you're actually considering this, I can't wait to hear about what the rest of your wedding is going to be like!

Yes. Professional DJ company. We go back a long time. They dj'd my sweet 16 and they were the main dj's in my favorite 3 clubs when I was younger. My friends and I tormented them until they played everything we asked. It feels like a hundred years ago. Thinking about how surprised my friends/ bridesmaids will be really puts a smile on my face.

But then five minutes later when I come out of my daydream and realize that it's $7000 to make them smile, I cry.

@Kristyn, $7,000 goes incredibly far, especially on a DW. I would use that money for someone else and hire a local DJ. Where is your DW? You should be able to find a decent one for $1,500 and a great one for $3,000 (including outside vendor fees). Still a lot less than paying $7K to fly someone in!

I am also having a DW, and am flying my photographers in. That's only costing me $2,500 for 2 r/t flights and 3 nights at the hotel (I have an agreement with them that by paying for their airfare, hotel and food--which is included in the hotel as it's all-inclusive--they'll shoot the wedding for free). $7K sounds EXTREMELY overpriced. If you're really set on this DJ do they have any wiggle room for negotiations? At some point you diminish the return on investment.

    Edits: grammar.

$7k does that include a friends and family discount lol

But really sounds very over priced

Just curious, what percentage of the 7k is travel and lodging?

More than half is paying for them to get there. They would have to drive some of the equipment down. Clearly I'll be hiring someone closer and inviting him to the wedding instead.

I think that's a great idea. If they end up coming, maybe you could connect them with the DJ you hire to see if they could tap in for a surprise set (maybe playing the songs you had at your sweet 16).

That is way too much. You still haven't answered where your DW us. People usually fly in vendors to decrease the cost. A local DJ shouldn't cost near that much

$7,000 is a bit expensive! I've never heard of anyone paying $10,000 for a DJ before, only a band.
