Flying for wedding

Our wedding destination is about a 16 hour drive, so I’m definitely considering flying to save time. Who has flown with their wedding dress? Any tips on making sure nothing goes wrong? I assume it’s counted as a carryon or you have to pay for a bag, but do most airlines let you put in the closets on board? Should I call and make special arrangements for it?

It depends on the plane that you fly on as not every plane has a closet. If yours doesn’t you can lay it flat on top of suitcases in the overhead space.

I shipped mine there and carried it on back. They may or may not be able to hang it for you and I didn’t want it shoved under suitcases but on the way back we had a smaller flight, plus I was having it cleaned after so I was ok with putting it up there folded.

I wrapped mine in tissue paper (around the belt so it wouldn't snag) and folded it into thirds in a hard case carry on.

How did you ship it? Any concern with folding it and getting wrinkles out?

I shipped it through FedEx and another time through UPS. They packaged it really carefully and it got ever so slightly wrinkled. Nothing that wouldn’t come out by just hanging it back up or using a portable steamer.

Good point. We’re a small airport so didn’t think about different plane sizes, plus we’d have a layover in ATL... might not be worth the chaos to fly with it and try to find places to keep it hung.
