flower fray help

Sheila, on May 2, 2010 at 1:34 PM Posted in Planning 0 14

I am doing my own flowers for the wedding, and they are not the best quality flowers so they are starting to ravel a bit on the edges, do any of you know how to stop it from getting worse? i had thought maybe the spray flower glitter would help some but i dont know.

IDK, i've never worked with fake flowers..but when my ribbon frays I use a lighter and get the flame close to the edge so it will warm a bit and then it will form a type of seal on the edge to prevent fraying. Not sure if it'll work the same but if you have an extra one you could at least give it a try?

I bet clear nail polish or hair spray would work. But I haven't tested that so make sure you try it on one you can spare first!

Go to walmart or a fabric store and look in the craft/sewing aisle. There is a product that is "no fray" for your clothes that have torn or seams. It is a clear liquid that you put on where you neeed it and wait for it to dry. It is by the "stich Witchery"

FRAY CHECK!!! I think that is the name of the product! You can also follow Meagan's suggestion with heating the edges. BUT it will give you the melted look. Heidi-I swear I wish we lived closer so we could have crafting days! LOL

Definitely go with the Fray Check but don't pile it on or it will create a dark discoloration. You don't need much because a little goes a long way.

My sisters flowers did that too. So we waited until about a week before the wedding and took a pair of really sharp scissors and trimmed the edges. Then we sprayed a little hair spray on the edges and they held up good.

But that Fray stuff sounds amazing lol.

Patricia Nimocks makes a "Clear Acrylic Sealer" in a spray can. Get the Matte finish. I spray the back side. Make sure you do it outside because it really stinks. I use two light coats and it has worked beautifully. I used it on these.

I can't remember where I got it, but it was probably Michael's or Walmart.

I agree with the hairspray or use clear nail polish.

I think that can of sealer was about $4.99 - I've had it for 3 years and I've sealed a lot of flowers - there's still a ton left. I spray the backs when the flowers are completed. It also doesn't get sticky like hairspray. Some of the other tthings mentioned will darken the fabric - especially Fray Chek. I've tried them all - just trying to help.

I use fray check and spray sealer all the time. Fray check is good for small jobs like ends of ribbons. Spray sealers are great for larger jobs.
