Florist and specific flowers

Lauren, on October 23, 2019 at 10:18 AM Posted in Style and Décor 1 10
I need some help. I met with a florist who seems great, awesome reviews and is a recommended vendor for my venue. However, she sent the contract but without the SPECIFIC flowers I wanted. I asked if we could included the specific flowers we discussed and she said they cannot do that because just in case something happened.. I guess I’m confused because I am paying for these specific flowers and it makes me unsure if I want to use them if they can’t give me the specific flowers. Is this normal??

I think you need to call and ask for clarification. I am not sure what "just in case something happened" means.
My florist did let me know there are certain flowers that are difficult to get, not in season, etc. Is this the case here?
Ask for specific reasons why she cannot get the flowers you want. If the reasons seem valid, I suggest you look into alternative flowers at her suggestion- since she is the expert. OR, if there are just increased fees with certain flowers and you are willing to pay- let her know.
Otherwise, you can always get a quote from a different florist to see what they think.

She emailed me saying that because of Mother Nature, and the floral industry being unpredictable, “things” happen out of their control. I will call to clarify though, because she said they can “reference” my flowers but cannot 100% guarantee them.

Ah yes, mine said the same thing, actually. I didn't really have specific flower requests except that I like ranunculus and Juliet roses. I trust mine to use her vision to replace my desired flowers with similar ones if something were to happen. So I didn't think much about it. If you aren't willing to compromise then I would look into another florist who can guarantee.

That is super helpful! I just wasn’t sure if this was normal or not for them to not exactly include the specific types. I’m not very picky either but I wanted to make sure this wasn’t sketchy or anything. I’m definitely willing to compromise in case something happened, I just don’t want to get ripped off!

My flower contract has a line about how substitutions may be needed if the flowers received are not of quality suitable for a wedding, but that the integrity of the look/color scheme will be maintained, and flowers of equivalent value will be used.

I don't know if any florist would 100% guarantee a specific flower unless it's super common/plentiful and they've never run into a supplier issue with it before.

In the contract though, like how did she lay it out? Did she put “flowers/greenery on arch” like very generic like that?

I'm not having ceremony florals -- just bouquets, boutonnieres, corsages, flower girl petals/crown, and cake flowers.

In the contract, she did list out colors and very specific flowers/greens for my bouquet.

For the other elements, she had the descriptions read something like 'Smaller version of the bridal bouquet,' 'Boutonniere to compliment bouquets' (also included a mock-up picture of these), 'Baby's breath and greens,' 'Greens and Blooms to compliment bouquets, a few for each tier.' So everything is basically being built to complement the specifics she laid out for my bouquet.

I think it's most likely normal. And if you're planning many months in advance, they can't necessarily absolutely guarantee they can get exactly what you want. There's no way to know how the flower market will be next year and if the blooms you want will be available from her vendor at the time of your wedding. I'm positive though that the florist would find something very similar and at least the same shade if something did happen. I know I requested dahlias in my bouquet but when I got it there were mums instead. I'm not sure what happened there, but my florist never said anything to me about it. I think that's just normal.

Here's photos of what I showed my florist for inspiration and what I got. I wanted mine a bit darker and I was very adamant about the dahlias, but my bouquet was very similar and still beautiful. I think you can rest assured knowing they'll do what you want or make it so close you won't be able to tell the difference.

I know it's so easy to stress about every detail. But I assure you, your vendors are there to make sure your vision comes to life and give you whatever you want! I'm sure the contract is written that way just to protect the florist from liability issues. But don't worry, your flowers will be perfect!
