Flight with a wedding dress?

Carolina, on May 30, 2018 at 10:13 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 16
Hi all! Has anyone on here traveled with a wedding dress? We are flying JetBlue (international) with a layover in FLL. Anyone have experience with this? I called the airline and they pretty much told me it’s up to the staff at the gate whether I can bring it on. Any advice appreciated!

I heard Jet Blues planes don’t have coat closets, so your garment bag will have to be your carry on. I’ve also read that a lot of the times the flight attendants will let you hold onto it until everyone’s bags are in the bin, then you can lay it flat across the top of everything, or they’ll find an emptier bin to put it in. I’m also flying Jet Blue, so I’ve done some googling...

Thanks!! I also thought about sending it with my sister who is flying American. (Had I known this I would have booked American) makes me nervous that the attendant may not let me take it on.

I flew with my dress after I bought it. It needed to go in an overhead compartment on the plane. I’m anticipating the same thing when we fly to our wedding next week too.

I bought a carry on hard suit case that locks. I will be bringing the dress in the carry on so I know it is safe. The hotel we are staying at has a steamer!

The flight back home was Delta. My current flight is going to be Spirit.

I was worried about this with our destination wedding so we decided to make it into a road trip (we live an 8 hour drive from our wedding location), but we love road trips so its also like a mini moon for us! WiIl your dress fit in a garment bag? I saw a bride bring her dress on a Southwest flight before and the flight attendants were really nice about it!

That’s a good idea- I’m really not sure, it should be arriving soon for my fitting so I’ll have to see id rather put it in a carry on and be sure it’s fit and deal with steaming it at destination then worried they will make me check it and it get lost.

I haven’t heard they won’t let you take it on the plane. If it’s in a garment bag, it’s just your carry-on. Unless you can’t carry on garment bags anymore? I’ve never needed to, so I’ve never thought about it.

I'm flying from LAX to JFK, with my dress, next year and was researching this. I'm solving this problem by booking myself first class (already tracking flights on hopper!) No way am I risking my dress either not making the flight or getting stuck in an overhead. First class passengers have closets on all airlines, in which to hang things.

SOMETIMES you can get lucky and get a great flight attendant that will let you put things in there--I've traveled with bridal shower/bachelorette cupcakes for my friends and the flight attendants have let me utilize that closet. However....totally not risking it for my dress!

Yup! Jet blue doesn’t have first class - hence my problem. Didn’t even think about it until recently. Oops

I'm flying SW to Vegas with my dress and have been told I can take it and store in the overhead bin. I'll call the airline closer too and confirm. I also got a not huge dress so hopefully that will help too

I would contact American to confirm. I flew American and when I called they basically told me I had to check-it, or figure a way to put it on my carry-on baggage. Luckily my dress was a mermaid slim dress, and I was able to carefully fold it with a lot of tissue paper, and pack it in a carry-on suitcase. It worked out fine, I just had to steam it at the destination. Just remember whatever you do place it inside a plastic bag or a waterproof garment bag, this was something my seamstress was very adamant about. Apparently she had heard horror stories of people spilling liquids in the garment bag and staining the dress. Good luck!

We're doing the same thing. we have too much stuff to bring to fly. Our road trip will be 15 hours each way! What a way to spend our last "single" days, in addition to our first married days!
