First Dance. Dance Lessons?

Future Mrs. R, on July 5, 2014 at 10:24 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 15

Me an FH finally decided on a song for our first dance and I found out my FH does not know how to slow dance. I was trying to teach him and he felt bad about not being able to catch the rhythm. I am considering dance lessons so that he will be comfortable dancing during our first dance. Did anyone else get dance lessons or considering?

We had a couple. We wanted to do a swing dance, and definitely needed help on that.

We are getting lessons because we want to avoid the dreaded "Middle school slow dance"

We are def getting dance lessons. Even though its not much more than rocking back and forth. We want to make sure we don't look stupid doing it.

We took a few lessons. DH learned the basics and how to lead properly. Prior to the wedding we focused ONLY on the dance that we were using for the wedding (rumba) to avoid confusion on DH's part. It really helped him feel more confident as he can be a bit shy...

We are. FH has zero clue how to dance. We're going to take two-step lessons from his cousin so FH will be fully comfortable (cross my fingers) on the wedding day.

Our first dance is actually going to be an upbeat hula so we're having someone choreograph it, so FH will have to take dance lessons.

However, I don't see anything wrong with just swaying for a slow dance. The reason I say that is I watched one of FH's friends who had taken dance lessons and it looked like they were so focused on the steps that they weren't enjoying it. It looked SO much more awkward and forced than if they had just hugged each other close and swayed. But maybe a few little moves would be okay to work on together!

I'm a dancer. FH is NOT! I think ballroom is so elegant and want to do a simple ballroom dance as our 1st dance - so yes, we're taking lessons. I'm really looking forward to it.

We have already had one lesson so far. Three more to go! We are doing a bolero to Snow Patrol's Chasing Cars.

I went to a wedding last night where the bride and groom were obviously both dancers and did some serious swing dancing. It looked amazing, but only because they were both good at it.

We took lessons. I think even if you don't want something choreographed (we didn't), it will a) help you figure out what dance is appropriate for your song selection and teach you the basic steps; and b) help to make it look more elegant. When FH and I started, we were total clods. Our dance is still far from perfect, but at least we have good dancing posture, aren't tripping over each other and do some steps we never would have learned on our own.

We just started taking them and we are having fun. Pretty much everything Barbara said! We have one 45 minute class a week and we practice for about 10 minutes three times a week otherwise.

If you can, take some lessons.

FH is a professional dancer and owns a dance studio. Me on the other hand, although I do dance, I'm only good at Latin :-) So, we have been practicing -- well, he has been teaching me for the last three months (and I still think I'll mess up but whatever). Whenever I can, I help him with wedding couples and at the end of the lessons they all are extremely thankful they sign up for classes. By the way, it is better not to choreograph the dance but rather learn the basic steps and let them flow when doing the actual dance. Choreography always end up causing more panic than anything.
