Filed my marriage license pre-application!

Cabell, on March 23, 2010 at 10:45 AM Posted in Planning 0 16

So I just filed my pre-application for our marriage license--Las Vegas has such a booming wedding industry, you can file up to 60 days in advance and go to an "Express Window" to pay and pick up your license before the wedding. Today we're at 59 days to go, so I went to the site and put it all in, printed our confirmation number, and that's it until we pick it up!

Kind of funny filling it out--I'm sure it's pretty standard, but why does it matter where your parents were born, especially if you're a US citizen yourself? Funnily enough, both FMIL and my own mother were born outside of the US; FMIL's family was South African and immigrated to the US when she was a little kid, while my mother's father worked in Chile for the Anaconda Mining Co., so she was born there although both her parents were from the US.

    That is exciting! :>)

P.S. I feel like where your Ps are born and your mothers maiden name are just questions tagged onto anything w/ paperwork. LOL

It was super easy to get our marriage license. It took about 5 minutes tops and all I needed to know was our names, ages, SS#s and addresses. Oh and whether we had been married before and whether we were related. And I got to take it home right then. That is weird that its different in every state.

Yeah, a lot of states require blood tests, but not Nevada--NV also doesn't have a waiting period. This may explain why Vegas is so popular. :p

STDs, mainly. You know, the other kind. :p

The idea is that the state wants to ensure that both parties are aware of each other's STD status before getting legally married. In some states they also test for consanguinity (whether or not you're too closely related to marry by law).

We are getting married in Vegas too and I filled out our license online a couple of days ago. I thought some of the questions were a little intrusive. I wish they had a way to make the license private like in California.

That's cool you can do that! and do it online!

jennjenn-i'm not a fan of california's "private license" thing...i had a boyfriend who was a marine, who got married to a woman who was legally married to not only 2 more marine's, but also 3 more civilians...and after all of the licenses came up, they were all "private" meaning while we were busy tryin to find this crazy B1t(h, we couldn't google marriage licenses, because they were private. they really need to do away with that. it was used "back in the day" so that couples who got pregnant before marriage, could apply to be married in private, that way there was no question about "legitimacy" of a child...at least, some states were like that, especially in the south. idk about calfornia tho...

I don't think the searchable license is going to have my mother's last name and place of birth on it... sounds like identity theft waiting to happen. :p They just require it for identification purposes.

Congratulation! The reason you have to fill out all the family history stuff is so that 100 years from now when your great-great grandchildren are researching their ancestors, they can match family members and not get 87 Susie Smith's and not know which one is THEIR ancestor.

Congrats on getting the license paperwork filled out! Smiley smile Turns out that VA doesn't have a waiting period or bloodwork required either. VA - the new Vegas. Just not as fun.

Fh and I are probably going to be going in on Monday to do this. Originally we were going to wait until the beginning of April but I just check the calender and the soonest we would be able to do it would be the 5th, my bath/shower party is the 3rd and I think I want the license before than.

LD: Ha, I know! We also just mailed in the paperwork for our officiant's temporary license to officiate in Nevada (since he's a minister in Wisconsin). That has to be sent in no more than 90 but no fewer than 30 days in advance--I would have preferred to do it sooner but it took awhile to get all the forms we needed filled out & notarized.

Mary: Glad I could help! :-)
