Female Usher? Or other tips?

Emily, on February 1, 2014 at 9:23 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 10

So here's the situation... My brother (who is a groomsman) started dating his girlfriend a year and a half ago now. We got engaged a year ago and I asked my girls to be bridesmaids about a month or two after. (At the time did not know my brothers girlfriend really well) I'm now pretty close to my brothers girlfriend and want her to be involved, actually wish she was a bridesmaid but I think it's too late for that (and I already have 7 bridesmaids and a junior bridesmaid). Thought about making her be my personal attendant since she is a hair dresser and would be good at fixing me up during the day but I don't know how special that job would be. Also thought about having her be an usher but is that weird to have a girl? We have 2 male ushers already, were getting married at a church. Approximately 250 guests.

Any advice or tips would be greatly appreciated! Smiley smile

Maybe she could do a reading at the ceremony?

I wasn't aware that being an usher is a "men only" thing... I don't see the problem. Or can she hand out programs?

She can be a "hostess." We have 2 ushers and 2 hostesses. The hostesses provide programs and do little things to help out.

I don't think you have to be Catholic to do a reading at the mass. We're having a Catholic service and we have a non-catholic that is going to do a reading Smiley smile

I don't see anything wrong with having a female usher. I've considered having only female ushers (we have more female friends than male). If you're comfortable with it, I say go for it!

She could be an usher if you actually need another one, but I would have her do the reading. As Laura said, it does not matter if she is not catholic.

She could be your "go to" girl for the day of. I believe every one should pin a person to have all wedding day-of questions directed at; she could have a list of all vendors/names and names of important people. That could also involve being like a personal attendant. You and your BMs won't have time to do all of those little things and it's still a way for her to be involved. My aunt did that for me at my wedding and it was great.

Thanks for all your advice! I like the hostess idea! Maybe she could be both a hostess and my personal attendant for the day? Hmm..
