FDIL just texted asking a question I don't know and don't have a personal opinion on. Ladies???

Midwest May, on April 4, 2016 at 6:00 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 43

Her 12 year old daughter is a bridesmaid. She's tossing the bouquet. Her question is "Is it appropriate for daughter to be with other women trying to catch the bouquet?"

I don't see a problem but what's your opinion? I don't think bride wants her daughter to do this but doesn't want to be the meanie. But that's just a guess.

I don't see anything wrong with it - except that I've read there are some weddings where the guy who catches the garter then puts it on the leg of the girl who caught the bouquet. I've never seen that but it sounds awful. As long as they're not doing that, it's fine.

I don't see the problem either. I've seen that if a young girl catches the bouquet then the garter can be put on her arm instead of her leg so it's less awkward.

I suspect shes asking you because she has a feeling if she doesn't and you feel it is inappropriate, you'll probably make it hellish for her.

Just an inkling based on past posts.

Like Rebecca said, if the guy that catches the garter is supposed to put it on the girl that catches the flowers, not a good idea. Personally, I would lean towards the adult single ladies (sometimes those girls get mean), but I think FDIL should so what she thinks is best for her daughter.

I caught a bouquet when I was 13. There was no garter situation. Everyone just awkwardly moved on.

I don't see a problem with it, but if she doesn't want her daughter there, she can throw the bouquet to the older ones and then present a smaller one specifically to her daughter.

Maybe she can forgo that and keep her bouquet or do the anniversary dance instead.

Both of my daughters (8 & 14) will be part of the bouquet toss. As will my other fg (7). In a lot of weddings I've been to, the older ladies let the little girls catch the bouquet on purpose. I think it's adorable.

There shouldn't be a problem with it. I got to try when I was 7. I didn't catch it but it was still fun.

I caught the garter when my mom remarried- I was about 12. Unfortunately they did the whole guy who catches the garter puts it on the girl who catches the bouquet. I literally hid under a table. So awkward.

So, if you skip that step (which I find horrible regardless of age), then I think it's fine. But if FDIL doesn't want her daughter to participate due to age, I would support her on that.

A 13 year old girl caught the bouquet at the last wedding I attended, lol. Nothing wrong with it, if anything it just makes it more funny.

No help from me. Almost all the wedding I've attended are 21 and up and no one tosses anything.

I don't see an issue with her being out there. Especially since shes a BM. I dislike the tosses and most weddings that I have been to lately no one wants to catch the bouquet or the garter.

Can you ask her why she is asking your opinion on this and that you genuinely don't care?

Precisely why I am not throwing a bouquet. Little girls and grown women shouldn't be fighting each other for a bunch of flowers that some archaic tradition says is somehow related to marriageability.

I don't see an issue. It's not like anyone will actually think she's trying to get married next.

My 11 year old cousin caught my bouquet. My photographer took a picture, her mom told her she better not get married anytime soon, we laughed and moved on. (Didn't do a garter toss.)

Little girls get excited to catch bouquets...I've actually never seen the part where the guy who catches the garter puts it on the girl who caught the bouquet, I honestly didn't know that's what they do with the garter until reading it on WW
