My FH and I got engaged 7/19/16 .. My dad sudden passed 12/29/16. My dad and I chose Butterfly Kisses as our song to dance to but I felt funny dancing with someone else to it. I chose You should be Here by Cole Swindell and spilt the song between my brother, my uncle, and my father in law. It seemed like a good choice at the time. Now the wedding is 60 days away, I can't even listen to the song :/ I even considered switching to Butterfly kisses but I cry even harder. I was telling my FH the other day I was thinking of not even doing a dance. And he said that if I don't have one he wasn't going to either. Which I can't take that away from his mom :/

Any suggestions? What did you do? How in the world did you get threw it emotionally?

I am dancing to "Dance like My Father" with my uncle who is like a brother to me (we are close in age) and I will be surprising my mom with "Mama"

My dad passed away 2 years ago and thankfully was able to meet my fiancé before he passed away from Colon Cancer super young.

My dad passed away suddenly 12/28/16. Every time I think or talk about my wedding I think about how he won't be there.

I am with you on skipping the dance all together. No one else can take that place, and the whole time dancing I (and probably everyone else) would just be thinking that my dad should be the one there. My fiancé will dance with his mom, but we won't have the DJ announce it or make a big deal about it.

I know exactly what you're going through... stay strong. And know that your dad would want you to have the greatest day ever and he will be there with you.

Your wedding is a very emotional day and if you're emotional now I would highly reconsider it. Maybe take a moment of silence for your dad and do a mother-daughter dance instead

Thank you so much everyone! I really appreciate all of you guys to take time of out your day and post your advice and support. I'm going to ask my FH again if I can just skip my dance and him still dance with his mom. If not i'll choose a different song, I feel like no matter what the day will be hard and i'll cry during the dance anyway Smiley sad I am relieved to see i'm not the only one fighting with their FH about skipping the dance.

    Thank you again everyone!

My dad passed away and I'm not doing father daughter dance or dancing with anyone in replacement since that would take away from my dad I feel. I'm letting him have a dance with his mom and I'm fine with it.

I've seen someone do a "father/daughter" dance with switching between the brother/uncle/other male family members. Her brother made the announcement before the song explaining the meaning behind it and it was beautiful. Yes the bride cried but it was such a beautiful moment recognizing her dad. At the end of the song a projector showed a picture of her and her late father on the wall

I am so sorry for your loss. Losing a dad is something very hard to deal with forever. My dad died 18 years ago and I still have a very hard time with it. For that reason I will honor my father by sewing a piece of his favorite hat into my gown so he can walk down the aisle with me. I will not have a table with pictures or a slide show as that would be to emotional for me. I will also be skipping the father/daughter dance because for me that is a spot no other person can fill and I would likely break down if I tried. My fh also didn't want to have a mother/son dance if I wasn't getting my dance so I simply explained to him that my father was gone and I would very much love to dance with him but I have no choice he on the other hand has an amazing mother still here and he should treasure that moment he gets with her. I hope you get this figured out op and again I'm sorry for your loss

I am very sorry for your loss. My father unexpectedly passed away in April this year. As I approach my wedding day, I am constantly reminded that he will not be here. I have thought about doing a memorial dance to Cole Swindel's You Should Be Here. I hope to be able to make an announcement for everyone to join me on the dance floor to honor my father. I will most likely use this as my father/daughter dance. I know the tears will flow but I also know that I have dreamt of my father/daughter dance my whole life so I would probably regret just forgoing it. My thoughts are with you as you near your wedding date as well. I know the pain of planning after a loss so close.

My father passed away when I was 9. I am considering two options. I may dance to a father/daughter song with my mother and have the DJ announce, "The bride will now share a dance with her mother in memory of her father." I've also thought about sharing the dance with my stepdad, brother-in-law, and father-in-law.

I honestly think you should bag the dance all together. Weddings are already so emotional and there is no way you will get through either song without major tears...or at least I wouldn’t. I’m certain that your father would want you to only have tears of joy on your wedding day, and that all your guests know what your dad means to you without the public dance. Find time to listen and cry privately for the catharsis. I’m so sorry.

That was my dad and my song growing up as well. I too lost my father a few month before my fiance proposed. my dad was the most important person in my world and i know the pain you must be going through not having your dad there and the awkwardness it can cause going against typical wedding traditions . I'm sorry for you and anyone to has to experience it.

All I can say is do what you truly feel is best for you. So many people have told me how i should handle my fathers passing and not having his physical presence there on my wedding day and it all didn't feel genuine to my relation ship with my dad. my FIL offered to dance with me but I knew I'd be wishing it were my dad the whole time so i politely declined. Personally I'm forgoing the father daughter dance and choosing to honor my dad at two different ways throughout the day. - I'm walking down the aisle alone and will leave the 1st seat in my aisle open and place a yellow rose on "his" chair as i walk to the alter. We are also doing a toast with his fave drink in his honor to kick off the night.

My Fiance and MIL will be doing their dance though. For me it's a once in a lifetime moment i wish i could have and just because i can't experience that special moment I wouldn't want to my fiance or MIL to not get the opportunity. to each their own though. it's your wedding and it's your relationship with your dad so you do what you feel is best. if your fiance wants to forgo the dance to honor you thats great, just make sure his mother isn't hurt by it.

My father passed away unexpectedly 2 months ago, and I'm getting married in just 9 days. I asked my mom to walk me down the aisle and I'm putting a picture of my dad in my bouquet. As for the father/daughter dance I am going to dance with my mom to You Should Be Here. I'm sure we will both cry but I'm ok with that and I know he will be with us both on the dance floor.
My heart goes out to all you brides.

I lost my dad as well, 18 years ago. I'm getting married a lot later in life that many people and it was a long time ago, but I still miss him, and I still want him represented. My uncle (my Dad's brother) has kindly agreed to give me away. My Dad loved classic rock (Pink Floyd, Zepplin, Creedence, etc), so I think I'm going with "Wish you were here" by Pink Floyd. I like the idea someone posted about the upbeat song that he liked as well, but the more I think about it, it doesn't say what I want to say as well. I'm sure my Uncle would not mind. He misses him, too. I might swap it for something sweeter but no matter what - go with what your heart tells you. Never mind what anyone else thinks. It is YOUR wedding. If your step-dad, uncle, brother, mom - if they are close to you - do that. If you won't be able to bear it...don't do it. If you can't imagine not representing your Dad - definitely do it and wear LOTS of waterproof makeup. I feel for you. It never feels less. You might not feel it all day every day after a while, but it still feels like he was just here.

My deepest of sympathies go to you. May his memories bring you joy, the sadness of absence remind you only of golden times together, and the pain pass quickly like the rain, this day and always, until your heart once again feels whole. Be well.

Im so sorry for your lost. I know the pain tht ensues and the confusion on what to do. lost my dad in Sept 2017 and I’m getting married in June 2019. I have no brothers and I have no Grandpas that are alive. My dad had one brother but we aren’t super close. He’s walking me down the aisle because my dad requested that before he died but I think a dance with him would be awkward. So I am trying to weight my options and come up with something. I feel like I would regret not doing something but also am an emotional person. Was thinking about maybe a slide show of pictures of us or a mother daughter dance bc I’ve always been close to my mom. Or both. I am up for other ideas too. Just not sure what feels right.

I'm having the same problem. I lost my dad suddenly, July of last year. Getting married in October. I don't have a relationship with my mom. My sister and I are going to do the father/daughter dance. We are going to do Humble and Kind by Tim Mcgraw because it's like he's talking to both of us. My sister got engaged 2 months after I did. And we are doing the father daughter dance at her wedding as well. But she chose One More Light by Linkin Park. Which I cry every time I hear. So I definitely couldn't do that one.

I have similar situation. My FH and I hanve decided to for-go the traditional dances and just do a first dance and a wedding party dance. For me it was a concern that I would bring down the mood of the room. He was very understanding and we decided to make our own tradition. I wish you the best. I am a daddy’s girl so I know how you feel. Mostly your dad wants you to be happy. Follow your heart, not what other people think you should do. I wish you the best
