Father physically giving the bride's hand to groom?

I was in a wedding this past weekend, and during rehearsal, the preacher told the bride's father to literally put the bride's hand into the groom's hand. The bridesmaid beside me muttered, "There will be three goats and a bale of hay waiting for you as a dowry," and I about died. That's exactly what it felt like! Am I the only one that sees an issue with this? I'm a free and strong-willed woman, damnit, I'll choose to marry whom I please.

I think to each their own, everyone has their own rituals.

Our catholic priest wanted to take one of his ropes off (is that what's it's called??) and physically tie our hands together- i.e. "tying the knot." We both looked at each other and said nope. I've been to other weddings where the bride washes the grooms feet...

My father loves me, but is the least sentimental man on Earth. When I was in high school, he told me that if anyone ever asked him for my hand, he'd say no just to fuck with their heads. If we did something like this, I'm pretty sure he would solemnly inform FH "No takesies-backsies!".

It's just an old tradition. My dad did it at my sisters wedding and he will do it at mine too because I'm old fashioned.

I don't look at it so much as treating the bride as a possession so much as respecting her parents in asking them for their blessing. Honestly I think it's an endearing tradition.

I should add that we are doing the whole dad shakes FH hand, places my hand in FH's, kisses me and then pastor asks who give this woman to marry this man, and dad says her mother and I. We were practicing it and my dad was already bawling. He doesn't cry. Like ever. So I know it means a lot to him and doesn't bother me and I'm not offended by it so we are doing it.

I love this and might use it. Daughter getting married tomorrow and I am walking her, I was a single mom to her until I remarried and tho she likes her stepdad she wanted me to walk her. Her birth dad passed away in Jan. but they were not close. However, choosing her stepdad might have bothered other siblings who were closer to their father so it will just be me and I don’t was looking for something to say. This might work

Love this. Something my dad would probably say in my wedding day. I have my son in the wedding and his sign he hold says “ Here comes the bride, last chance to run Dad” can’t wait for the laughsSmiley smile
