Evening Campfire

I'm having a small intimate wedding with 35 people at a rustic venue. We're not having a DJ. Just a full dinner, short speeches and open bar. We'll be having music playing in the background throughout the evening and the speakers will play indoors and outdoors. I'm not expecting a long reception....

That said, I thought this sounded really rustic and warm and one of the biggest components of my wedding is lots of sweets. Our venue has a campfire similar to the one pictured and we thought it may be fun if after dinner (weather dependent) we had a small campfire with smores. I like the idea and love the smell of a campfire and it overall fits the feel of our wedding. On the other hand, I don't know if this would be enjoyable for people. Our wedding is probably more casual than most (with some formal elements). Thoughts? I've been debating his for a while and can't decide because of a number of pros and cons I see myself.

We're going this too! But we are using certain logs that aren't suppose to produce smoke. We will see!

I love this idea. As one who sees guests trying to enjoy it, what I hear most is, "I can't see what I'm doing! Where are the marshmellows? I can't see a damn thing!" Have the table of snacks well lit and it will for sure be enjoyed.

    Best wishes!

@KathleenS, my venue has nice lanterns that maybe I could use to light up the area. I certainly see lighting as being an issue once it gets darker, especially if I move it over a bit into the next field.

@Alexandra, where did you find the logs and are they expensive?

We have talked about doing this after our wedding. The difference would be that we would have the bonfire at our house. We are getting married at FH's childhood church so there is not a bonfire set up there. We were just going to spread the word to our guests and those that want to come are welcome! I love a good bonfire!

@Soon2BMrsB we got them at Home Depot! I don't remember how much they cost but FH says they were pretty cheap.

We are doing this too later on after it gets dark. We will also be offering hot dogs to roast in addition to the s'mores for those who are feeling the need for a more substantial late night snack.

The s'mores sticks are just pointy dowels. I found them on Amazon for $20/100. The ones they sell in the store are usually only 18", but I wanted longer because the fire might be big. They'll be in a vase on the floor next to the s'mores bar.

Not sure if you can see in the pic, but they're Hingis like using a Thin Mint instead of the chocolate, or a shortbread cookie instead of a graham. I've done this at home parties with Andes mints, peanut butter, chocolate chip cookies, etc. get creative but don't overwhelm the guests with choices.

@klimberkat, oh I see about what you mean with the sticks. For some reason I was confused what you meant at first. Great price, I'll definitely look into those!

I like the options you provided. Just a few extra things to add to the fun but not overkill Smiley smile

Klimberkat, are those frames from Ikea? They look just like ones I've seen at our MOA Ikea for .99/each. Those menu signs are AWESOME!

There's nothing more magical than a fire on a fall evening. People will hang around. Go for it.

I'm really excited about this idea now Smiley smile Is there a nice way to suggest to guests to bring a sweater? Just because it's mid-fall I don't want people to be too cold to go outside and enjoy it.

We aren't doing a wedding website, just an old fashioned RSVP card. Should I add an insert or something with this information? Or just spread the information by word-of-mouth?

So sweet. Love the ideas of blankets to wrap Up in. I think people will being jackets anyway and the fire will help keep them warm. Word of mouth is fine.

I LOVE it! People can decide whether to partake or call it a night. Sounds brilliant.

I think this would be a lot of fun. As far as the lanterns (because "where are the marshmallows? I can't see a damn thing!" always happens: Lanterns attract bugs so make sure they aren't right with the goodies for the s'mores.

You could put a little card in your invitation stating you will be having the bonfire. This gives fair warning to any asthmatics and lets people know what they are in for. I will be honest, I would probably bring an extra change of clothing because I smell like a bonfire every time I am around one and I wouldn't want that on my really nice clothes.
