Evening Campfire

Soon2BMrsB, on April 27, 2016 at 8:51 PM Posted in Planning 0 43

I'm having a small intimate wedding with 35 people at a rustic venue. We're not having a DJ. Just a full dinner, short speeches and open bar. We'll be having music playing in the background throughout the evening and the speakers will play indoors and outdoors. I'm not expecting a long reception.

That said, I thought this sounded really rustic and warm and one of the biggest components of my wedding is lots of sweets. Our venue has a campfire similar to the one pictured and we thought it may be fun if after dinner (weather dependent) we had a small campfire with smores. I like the idea and love the smell of a campfire and it overall fits the feel of our wedding. On the other hand, I don't know if this would be enjoyable for people. Our wedding is probably more casual than most (with some formal elements). Thoughts? I've been debating his for a while and can't decide because of a number of pros and cons I see myself.

Sorry, but count us out. There's lots of asthmatics, in our family. We attended a cousin's wedding, and they lit the bonfire, before it became dark, so we didn't see anyone even use it. My mother started choking, within a minute of it being lit, so they left. I've attended a few weddings, with sparkler exits, and my dresses smelled so badly afterwards, I had to have them professionally cleaned.

@Dreamer, very good point about asthmatics. As far as I'm aware no one on my guest list is, but potentially someone from my FH's family may be. The smell was one thing that I thought not everyone would appreciated if they wore super nice clothing. That was certainly one of my big concerns.

I think its really neat! I would just make sure its not in a central part of the outdoor area. If its off to the side or something then people can choose to be near the campfire or not .Some people may not want their dress clothes smelling like campfire. I'd be over there making some smores though! Smiley laugh

I think it's cute! I've seen lots of s'mores favors on Pinterest!! A favor people could actually use. Smiley smile

We have a firepit in our back yard and love it!

@Kristy, it could certainly could be off to the side. The property is a huge "farm" so to speak. They have a number of fields and it could be moved to a back field that's connected to the main plot but is divided by a small row of trees.

We're doing this! But everyone at our wedding pretty much lives around a campfire when the weather is appropriate. So we don't have any health concerns or anything. Love the s'more idea!

I think smores by the fire is so neat! I want to do smores too, but it doesn't exactly fit with the feel I am going for and if I do it, it would be indoors. But again neat idea!

I suffer from asthma, and as long as I can stand upwind from the smoke, they don't bother me in the least. I suspect every asthmatic is very different in triggers, so I wouldn't count it out just because of us lung-challenged people Smiley smile Any outdoor wedding may murder those with allergies/asthma anyway (sorry to my own guests!).

    I love the idea, personally.

The other concern I had was whether or not people thought this was a "hazard". Maybe I'm paranoid. I only have one child attending so hopefully things will be fine. I was just worried if booze and fire was a bad combo. I know people drink around a campfire a lot, so should I just assume it will be fine?

I love this idea! I think people can avoid it easily and people who want to be around it will be. I don't think it'll necessarily be a hazard. Will someone from the venue who hasn't been drinking be around to tend to it?

35 people, intimate, casual. I think this sounds like a ton of fun. People always drink around a campfire, I think its ok.

@LindseyO, well my venue has said we can use it but they didn't say they would tend to it or anything. I assume they will still be "around" after dinner is served. I may have to ask about this to see if they could check in on it periodically

We're doing this! I'll have a big s'mores bar with GS cookies and "recipes" for gourmet s'mores. We want it to turn into the after party so we're providing a bag check in one of the camp buildings and spreading the word to bring a change of clothes so everyone can stay and be comfy. I also bought 36" s'mores sticks so no one has to get too close to the fire to participate. I would also make sure there is a designated person (preferably from the venue or doc not a family member) in charge of monitoring the fire from beginning to end. Ours is the camp caretaker, he sets it up, lights it, makes sure no one falls in, and puts it out for us. It's the part of the day we're most excited for!

We are doing this at ours Smiley smile It's one of the little things I'm excited about.

The bonfire will be off to the side and have a smore's station.

I appreciated those who posted about considering guests who have asthma & younger guests. Those are good things to consider.

I'm really glad to hear my idea is overall generally well received Smiley smile

@klimberkat, I love the idea of gourmet smores. Do you have any examples of what that includes? Also, smore sticks? Never heard of those before.

Now I really want to make sure we have someone who will watch it. I'll email my venue soon about this to make sure.
