engagement ring sizing annoyances

Kate, on February 9, 2012 at 1:26 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 14

My fiance bought a 6 1/2... I thought I was a 6.

So I went to have it sized and the jeweler recommended going with a 5 1/2 was a little tight but the guy recommended to go with it anyway because you want it a little tight. So stupid me.. i listen to him.

After they finish... its too tight. So they up it to a 5 3/4. Which fits perfectly... But I realize the next day that their bumps and scratches in it and they messed up the shape. The stone part used to be up a little bit so it wasn't a perfect circle.

So I take it back and have them fix it. The shape will never be right but at this point its just impossible. They had to redo the sizing and take out a section on the bottom and add it back in in order to get the bump out. And I said I want to keep the size as a 5 3/4 because it fit well.

Now I sware they messed up and made it a 6 because it keeps moving around on my finger and spinning around. Its honestly annoying to wear at this point! I just want my ring back the way it was! Smiley sad

Sorry Kate ~ that is kinda a bummer.

But the weather and your water retention will change the way your ring fits.

Mine spins in the winter and fits perfect in the summer.

Mine too. When its colder my ring always spins. But if weather is good its perfect. Only time its tight is if I have sweaty hands.

That is a bummer. Unfornuatly they can only resize a ring so many times before they can't do it anymore. I want to say they can only resize a ring 3 times. You want the ring to be tight going over the nuckle but give you enough room so your hands can swell a little bit. The lady tried to convince me to go with a smaller size than I wanted and I didn't let her.

It is very possible that they could have messed up the sizing, given their track record so far, but it is also possible that your finger size fluctuates depending on the temperature, salt intake, etc.

I honestly have no clue what size my ring is. My FH and I picked out my setting together and it was already the perfect size for me. Same with my wedding band. I guess I just have a "sample sized finger."

MOST days, it fits great. Not too loose. Not too tight. However there have been many days this winter that because of how cold it is, it slides/spins around like crazy. At the same time, it is not worth it to re-size it because there are also times that my body is really hot, so my finger swells a bit and it is tight. When it is tight, it isn't too tight, but if I ever decided to re-size it smaller because of the cold days, on the hot days I fear it WILL be too tight. So it is a compromise.

But yea, have you just gotten it back? I would just wait and see how it fits on a day to day basis. You can't necessarily judge the right fit from just one instance, and it most likely, won't always be perfect. As long as it gives your finger a little room to swell on certain days, and won't fall off on those small cold finger days, you are good. You can also talk to the jeweler about temporary solutions and things you can stick in your ring to stop the spinning on the loose days if it really drives you crazy.

@futuremrsohler you have an average finger which is usually 6.75-7. Thats the size they have in the cases a a jewelry store.

I got it back 2 days ago. I purposely didn't go yesterday because I figured i needed a few days to make sure. It doesn't just spin... it also moves up and down. (like when my arms hanging down my ring falls.

I guess I can just go back and have them check the size and fix it if its wrong. I am hoping it is wrong because I know 5 1/2 is too small.

BTW I'm doing this all in Jared thinking they would have the best jewelers... wrongo. I had a promise ring my FH gave me after we were dating for about a month resized somewhere else and they smushed it down. It spins constantly. I always thought it was too big...even in the summer. Thats on my right hand which is larger then my left. Now ofcourse my engagement ring fits much better on my right hand.

I'm at the point where i'd rather have my diamond put into a new band cus this one had so much done to it. But thats prolly expensive.

Sorry this happened to you! If it spins, go to Claire's of The Icing and they sell Ring Snuggies. They're little things that wrap around the band of your ring to keep it in place. It's about $5 or $6 for a pack of 10 or so.

That isn't actually all that expensive. my FH did it with mine took 7 diamonds out of my g-moms e-ring and put it in the new setting cost about $500...and you have to be careful on how many times you re-size your ring it can tend to make the medal weaker

Mine is currently being resized. It makes me nervous, but it's been spinning since this time last year, all through the Texas summer. I was worried my weight change wouldn't last, so I put if off. It was almost falling off my finger. Hope it comes back okay!

I have tiny hands 3.5 is my ring size, but I had the same problem, with it spinning in the winter. My jeweler recommended Superfit. Amazing! They replaced the bottom of my ring so the ring opens up on a hinge and I don't have to slid it down my finger it just clicks on. They sized it down to 3.25 so its snug and doesn't spin at all and I dont have to worry about it getting stuck on my finger. I highly recommend. I've been looking at their website and I'm almost positive im getting my wedding band from them.
