Engagement ring not actually my taste

We've been engaged 6 months and my FH noticed that I rarely wear my engagement ring. I mostly wear it when we go out on dates and when we have dinner with family on the weekends. Since he brought up the subject I finally spilled the beans and told him that the ring doesn't reflect my personal taste. He took the news pretty well. We're either going to try to change the ring or I'll just help design my wedding band.

I feel awful because I know that he worked hard to save up for my ring. We have two kids and and he's been taking on side jobs to make sure we're able to pay for everything wedding related. Ladies am I being foolish? I really want to like my ring and I don't want to seem unappreciative

I made sure FH knew what I liked (we had been talking about getting engaged for quite awhile so he asked). I rarely wear jewelry and knew I wanted something simple. If it were too big and clunky i probably wouldn't have worn it much since I don't have much patience with jewelry. The idea is that you're going to be wearing it for the rest of your life, so you should like it and be okay with wearing it a lot.

I would have kept this detail to myself and upgraded it at the 5-10 year mark but thats not really a choice... what dont you like about it?

Miranda- no, it's not like a pair of shoes, it's so much more. It's an investment that requires planning - why would you not put enough thought into it to see what the recipient would like?

I wouldn't want my FH to wear something I bought him that he didn't like to appease me. I think it would go both ways.

Can you keep the diamonds from that ring and reset it in a different band? To keep some of the sentimental value from the ring he picked out?

I've decided to take the advice from a lot of people on this post. I'm going to try to wear the ring everyday and see if I can get use to it. I don't feel that the ring is ugly. I feel like it annoys me because the prongs stick out more than I would like. The ring snags onto diapers and clothes. I have to be careful not to scratch my kids and I'm always nervous about losing it. The ring is beautiful but I don't feel like it fits my lifestyle. I'll have a jeweler look to see if I can get smaller prongs or have the setting changed. I definitely appreciate all the feedback ladies! You all are awesome in every way

@OP, I would look into getting the setting changed, if possible. I've heard those split shaft rings are more difficult to find bands for. Plus it is a double halo so it could be even more difficult to find a band that will fit. Just a thought.

You already spilled the beans, and it sounds that he is handling it well. I would design the new ring together, have some elements that he designed and some elements that you design. Just make this new ring even more special because you both designed it together.

I think this is always tough. But, try to love it is my general advice and do an upgrade later. But, if he's open and willing then go for it and change it now.

I knew FH was going to propose, and I happened to see what he was looking at for rings. They were either gaudy or literally a tiny band with a rock plopped on top. He clearly had no idea what he was doing, so I convinced him to let me pick the band and he could pick the rock. Worked wonders and we both got what we wanted!

I would see if you can work with your ring in a similar fashion. Design around it until it's something you and your FH love. Designing the wedding band would be awesome! I hope you find something great.

I don't think it makes you bad for not loving it (though it's a very pretty ring!), and I think the way you handled it with FH was considerate given that I've seen other brides who've actually turned down a proposal based on the ring... ugh. I'd keep the ring and design a really nice wedding band that you can wear daily and maybe wear your ering for special occasions?

I think it's a sign of a strong relationship that you two could talk about this potentially delicate topic!! I think by picking out the wedding band you'll have something more reflective of you to wear with it or on its own sometimes.

    1)The ring is beautiful

2)My opinion doesn't, you have to love it it's on your fingers .

    3) it's just a ring , you're still engaged without it . I feel like people put too much importance on the rings .

    4) wear it for him .

I made sure I told my FH what to get me .

I love my ring. It's not what I wanted AT ALL and I never would have picked it out but I truly love it. It was his grandma's and that means more to me than picking my own ring.

My FH picked my ring. I wanted? him to since it would mean so much more coming from him. The surprise was great and I love my ring because the man I love bought it for me.
