Engagement ring not actually my taste

We've been engaged 6 months and my FH noticed that I rarely wear my engagement ring. I mostly wear it when we go out on dates and when we have dinner with family on the weekends. Since he brought up the subject I finally spilled the beans and told him that the ring doesn't reflect my personal...

We've been engaged 6 months and my FH noticed that I rarely wear my engagement ring. I mostly wear it when we go out on dates and when we have dinner with family on the weekends. Since he brought up the subject I finally spilled the beans and told him that the ring doesn't reflect my personal taste. He took the news pretty well. We're either going to try to change the ring or I'll just help design my wedding band.

I feel awful because I know that he worked hard to save up for my ring. We have two kids and and he's been taking on side jobs to make sure we're able to pay for everything wedding related. Ladies am I being foolish? I really want to like my ring and I don't want to seem unappreciative

I understand your feelings. You want to wear your ring everyday and love it. I showed my fiancé a picture of what I liked. He wanted to make sure he got a style I loved and would wear it proudly.

What do you not like about the ring? I love it! Post a pic of what you would have rather received.

I personally would have done the same thing you did. Liking my ring was important to me. FH and I started talking about rings and I just knew he would pick one I didn't like. Every ring he pointed out to me I hated. HaHa! We decided to pick out the ring together. The ring has the same meaning regardless of how it comes about. At the end we are all engaged. You may as well love what you have on your finger.

Luckily I am marrying a man that knows me so well and bought the best ring he could possibly have gottenSmiley smile I LOVE your ring and I think you should love it to. He picked it out special for you so that has to count for something.

I would have try to add a band that may make the ring more your style? That way you can still keep the original ring (I would get emotionally attached because he gave it to me and wouldn't be able to get rid of it) and just enhance it? I got an enhancer for my ring because the ring he gave me is just a little bit too big, but once placed in between the enhancer it holds it perfectly and makes it so much more my style! Good luck and I hope you can find a way to love your ring!

Nancy D my point was that her FH is working TWO jobs and had to save up for her ring for her to say it's not her taste. Yes, I agree they should have an honest relationship. However, don't think for one moment that he will EVER forget that the focus was not on the sentiment but more a materialistic point of view. I would be surprised if he wrote on here and stated that his pride didn't take a hit. I mean WOW how out of focused.

I think your ring is beautiful! But it is something you will hopefully want to wear everyday, and tastes are so personal. I think it will be fun for you all to pick our something together, especially since he already knows your feelings.

@ Rochelle: I get where you're coming from. I really do. However if he's working 2 jobs to pay for the ring, all the more reason for her to get something she likes! It's living in a box!

It's definitely reassuring that I'm getting a lot of positive feed back. We're looking into redesigning the ring or just having a simple band.

I think the ring is very pretty but I feel like it gets in the way of my everyday life. I feel like the prongs poke out more than I would like and get caught on diapers. I have to be careful not to scratch the kids. I feel like I would prefer just wearing a nice wedding band.

Just to clarify things... we're not in a bad financial situation at all. We're in the middle of trying to buy a house before the wedding and we also have two kids to support. With all that going on I was feeling guilty about wanting to change my ring. We refuse to go into debt over a wedding so we both do freelance work on the side to put money towards the wedding

It's not your fault that you don't like it. It's a beautiful ring but I would never wear it because it's not my taste. My FH knows I'm picky so I picked out my own rings

I don't like that people seem to be suggesting that their FH's know them better than other people's FH's know them. Like "omg my fiancé knows me so well he picked a ring I love"...that's so unhelpful and kind of a slap in the face to the OP.

OP, I'm so glad you and your FH could communicate through this. You're the one wearing it every day, you should love it.

Yeah this is why I don't understand the tradition of the man picking out the ring himself. It's such a personal piece of jewelry. My fiancee and I went ring shopping together. The proposal was still a surprise but I made sure I knew exactly what she wanted before I dropped thousands of dollars on a shiny rock. She did the same thing with me. I think you did the right thing by being honest with him, and it sounds like he has his heart in the right place and took the news very well.

I agree, it's a very pretty ring but I probably wouldn't want to wear it either - too much for my tastes.

I'm happy he took it so well though!

It honestly surprised me about how many of these posts about disliking the ring and surprise proposals - like, Do people really not discuss these things before hand? FH and I talked in-depth about marriage long before he proposed and he made sure to ask what I liked or didn't like - both are a lifetime commitment imo.

    1. Your ring is beautiful.

    2. I can't believe that you don't wear it every day. Not only did he save and work to pay for that ring (which I'm sure wasn't cheap). But this ring is supposed to be a symbol of your commitment to each other.

I cannot even imagine not wearing mine. And even if he took it well I'm sure you hurt his feelings.

It's not about taste. It's not a pair of shoes. You are engaged. Wear your engagement ring.

I just saw your comment about the prongs sticking out. Wearing your ring everyday will help you get used to it. You adapt and it won't get caught on stuff all of the time. I'm a nurse and at first I thought taking gloves on and off was a pain but now I feel weird if it's not on my finger. It won't stop feeling weird until you actually commit to wearing it every single day

I didn't like my ring at all at first. I had picked out a ring I liked and showed him. I'd asked him to take my sister when he went ring shopping because she knows my taste in jewelry.

He didn't get the ring I'd asked for and he didn't take my sister shopping with him. He picked out a ring that I would never have picked for myself.

I was disappointed that I didn't have the ring I wanted and didn't understand why he would pick this ring.

I eventually told him that I didn't like it and he explained his reasoning for picking it out.

Now that I understand, I'm growing to like the ring more all the time. I think that not holding in my feelings was a huge weight off.

Maybe give it a little more time. This ring might come to mean more to you. If not, don't feel bad for wanting something that you both love.

It's a beautiful ring. However, if my FH had bought that one for me, he'd have taken it back before I wore it. I'm picky about my jewelry. Also, with my being married once before, it was imperative that the ring was nothing like my former ring. FH knew this. He asked for my opinion on rings. We went shopping ( which in hindsight was a bad idea) and I picked out a gorgeous ring that wasn't close to his budget. 2 years before we were engaged. The topic came up and I worked harder to find something I actually like more but with a more realistic budget.

I feel like you have a say in what you wear. I'm happy your FH was not upset and took it well. Every one has a personal style. It might help in the long run, him learning more about this side of you.

That ring is absolutely beautiful! What type of ring did you want instead and what did you not like about it, just curious?

@Rochelle: I don't think you should project how your fiancé would feel onto another person.

What do you say to couple who has been married for 50 years and no longer wears rings? Is there commitment any less?

This is a personal thing. But as sweet as it sounds, I'm not accepting a string.
