Engagement ring and wedding band on opposite hands?

Elizabeth, on December 27, 2016 at 11:17 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 22

Apparently this is a trend. Do you wear yours on the opposite hands or same hand?

This is a trend? I'm so out of the loop then... no, I will be wearing them together, on the left hand.

I'm gonna wear both of mine on my left hand. I'm thinking about soldering them, but we'll see what I end up doing.

I think that may be more of a European thing to wear the rings on separate hands. I know women in some European countries wear the wedding band on the right hand. I've read about this but I'm drawing a blank on which ones. I wear my set on my left hand; the only time I wore my engagement ring on my right hand was during our wedding and I almost didn't get it off my right hand to switch to my left!

On the wedding day, before the ceremony, the bride frequently transfers the e-ring to the right hand (if it will fit). After the wedding band is in place, she transfers the e-ring back to the left hand.

If the e-ring is very elaborate or wide, some brides skip a separate wedding band and use the e-ring as both.

After a broken engagement or a divorce, some women wear their e-ring on their right hands.

Haven't heard of this. I've read that the Egyptians started the trend of the left ring finger because they believed the vein from that fiver leads directly to the heart. I barely based biology so couldn't tell you if it's true or not, but I think it's sweet.

    "I don't think that's a trend"

I've seen it three different times in the past few months, so while "trend" might be presumptive, once I've seen it in different people in different circles, I tend to wonder what I'm missing and who else is doing it that I'm not aware of.

I just saw it on one of the consultants at my bridal salon this morning. When I showed her my wedding band, she told she wears hers on the right (engagement ring on left) and stacks it with an anniversary band her husband gave her. Back in October, one of my friends began doing this too and said she doesn't like having more than one ring on any one finger. I also saw a nurse I work with with a wedding band on her left hand and diamond ring on her right, but I didn't ask her about it.

Anyway, it's just something I noticed and didn't quite understand. Maybe some women have always chosen to do it and I just never noticed it before.

A recently married pal of mine does this and I will be doing it too. I don't know if anyone is confused. You're not wearing your wedding band on the opposite hand. Just wearing your e-ring on the other hand.

    My rings don't "match'.

Actually one of my best friends does this! She said her mom had always worn her rings separately like this so she decided to too.

ETA: I can see this being a great choice for people who have a hard time finding a wedding band to fit their engagement ring, or for those who like how their e-ring looks on it's own!

A friend of mine does this but has a very oddly shaped stone in her ering and doesn't like how her wedding band looks with it.

Wearing the engagement ring on the right and the wedding ring on the left is the common practice in Turkey. I believe that's also the case in much of Eastern Europe. Some Jewish-Americans wear wedding rings on their right hand--a couple of old bosses of mine do this.

I only know one person who does this and it's because her band is yellow gold with rubies, and her e-ring is vintage yellow gold.

When I was little I actually used to think that's how you were supposed to do it. I probably won't, but the idea isn't too outrageous to me.

Wearing mine on the same hand. I have a ring on my right hand already that belonged to my grandmother.

I'm debating about this. I'm left handed and I hit my engagement ring on everything - I'm worried about damaging it so I am debating about wearing my engagement ring on my right and my wedding band on my left. Still torn though because I do love them together.

Also FH is considering wearing his on his right hand. He ordered the original LOTR ring from New Zealand and it didn't come in half sizes. It is a little too big on his left hand but fits perfectly on his right. He is also left handed. Nothing is decided but since we are both left handed and it is already becoming a problem for me we were discussing both wearing ours on our right.

A trend? No. A lot of people do this, and it has been pretty common for many, many years. It's just a personal preference, not a trend. A trend would be rose gold, white gold, or sapphire center stones (all of which have been or are jewelry trends within the last 15 years).

^ as I said, maybe it's not a trend, but I hadn't seen it until recently.

Thanks to all who replied. I didn't understand the point when I first saw it, but it makes sense.

I actually just had a conversation with my mom about this. My e-ring is in a pretty large "nest" making it hard for other rings to be by it, hence the consideration for the other hand. I already wear a ring on my right hand though that I love. I may have my wedding ring set so it nests into my e-ring but I don't think we can afford it right now and may get a cheap/simple ring in the meantime and do the wedding ring in a year or so.
