engagement presents?

robin, on September 7, 2011 at 12:29 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 36

My FH and i got engaged on March 18th. The only engagement presents we have received are from my mom and MOH and a cousin of my took us out to dinner when she was in town. I have not registered anywhere yet, since we live so far from most of our family and friends we are not having an engagement party. Do you ladies think it is weird we haven't gotten any presents?

The other ladies here are better versed on etiquitte than I am, but I don't believe that engagement presents are customary even if you do have an engagement party.

I only received a couple of gifts, one a cash gift from my parents to help fund the wedding and the other was a gift from my FMIL's best friend whom we hardly know. I did receive some congratulatory cards from a couple cousins but that's it. I didn't expect anything so they were all a nice surprise.

Have you had an engagement party? We didn't receive any gifts until our party, and we didn't even expect to receive any then.

I had a small engagement party and no one brought us gifts. I do not think people give them anymore. I did receive a few nice cards, but that is all.

A friend of ours who got engaged at the same time we did was thrown an engagement party by his parents who invited mostly their friends. He received cash gifts totaling upwards of $10 000. That's a nice way to start an engagement. Smiley smile

We didn't get any gifts (no engagement party) although we did get two cards, which was great! We went to an engagement party for friends of ours last year and only took a card; it seemed like they received a few gifts but mostly bottles of wine.

We havent gotten anything.. we got engaged almost a month ago.. not planning on getting anything either. The registries are done though and on the website, because that was something i could take care of now rather then stressing about later.

I think you are lucky that your MOH, mother, and cousin took you to dinner..

You get presents when you get engaged?!?!?!?!
crazy. No it's not weird that you haven't recieved anything yet because generally you don't get "engaged" presents although it is typical for at least one person to say "You're getting married?! Let me buy you a drink" (I got at least 3 drinks that I didn't register for!)

If you had an engagement party, you might have seen a couple of presents, but gifts are not to be "expected" for any occasion, but gladly accepted.

I dont' think we got any engagement presents. I think it a cultural thing-some areas all do engagement presents and others would never even consider it.

We also didn't get any. Although I didn't expect any either. We did get a bottle of "two consenting grapes" wine. I thought that was cute.

Yeah, I didn't get any either and we had a very small engagement party. I did get toasting flutes from my aunt, but not sure if that was an engagement gift or a bachelorette/shower gift since that party was cancelled unexpectedly.

I don't really think it's customary. Even when having an engagement party. I don't think i'd want to give gifts twice either. If I am gonna go to a wedding, I'd rather give one gift.

But anyway, I think a nice card that says congrats is nice. i think cards were my favorite part honestly.

We did have an engagement party and recived gifts from a few people but the party was 3 months after we got engaged, and I specifically told people no gifts but some did anyway.

We didn't have an engagement party, but we have received wine glasses from one of my bridesmaids and a picture frame from another bridesmaid and a few bottles of wine from various other friends. Also, my parents gave us some money for the wedding and we got a few cards in the mail.

I was reallllllly shocked about the gifts. If a close friend gets engaged, we always buy them a bottle of champagne and a card though, so I figured we would get a few small tokens.

I would never go to an engagement party without a gift though. I got my friend and her FH a bottle of champagne and a card when they got engaged and now they are having an engagement party, so my FH and I bought them some martini glasses that they registered for.

I got a couple of things, but nothing was expected of course. My Aunt and Uncle got me this really pretty crystal heart ring holder which I love. And my Aunt's best friend got me two books... Bridal Bargains and the Everything Wedding Organizer Book! Oh and one of my best friends took me Things Remembered like 2 days after we were engaged to get me the toasting flutes!

We received toasting flutes from my mom and sister, a bridal magazine subscription from a fried, a ring holder from a friend and a ton of champagne and flowers (we had an informal engagement party with friends)

When close friends or relatives get engaged, I usually give a bottle of champagne and several bridal magazines (not subscriptions).
