Engagement Pictures...for the non-skinny.

I am starting to look into photographers to do our engagement pictures. But I am struggling because when I look at photographers portfolios all the pictures are of skinny people. I am a plus-size girl (size 18) but my fiance is a normal guy. He is also super photogenic...where I am not so much. Its nice that a photographer can take really awesome photos of skinny people, but how about someone of a bigger size? I feel like that takes more talent. Also I dont want all of our pictures to close up of our faces because the photographer is working around my size or something like that. Any recommendations on poses or anything for my pictures? Styles of clothes? Colors or patterns?

Sweetie, #1, you're the cutest thing..PERIOD. and #2... if you go out there taking pics, feeling self conscious... it will show. You need to wear something you LOVE and you FH loves.... HAVE FUN and enjoy it, if you FEEL confident, then that will show. I think you take great pics too, and trust me, not many ppl love their own pics... i take pics of new moms, with no makeup, just had a baby and they PROTEST, but i tell them, trust me. THIS MOMENT only happens so infrequently you need to just embrace it... just like E Pics... its not all the time you will do this (we hope, lol) so enjoy it... make the memory and have fun!! AND, guess what, that pic they think is going to be horrible is a beautiful moment between mom and her newborn, and they LOVE IT.. you'll love these as well.. go enjoy! and then show us here cause we love pics too!!

You have nothing to worry about. You look awesome! Photographers know how to pose everyone that flatters them. Smile big and be confident.

Off topic and just curious, but did you photoshop the above photo or is just my screen? It looks like there are dodge/burn marks everywhere. It may be my screen. :-/

Thank you sabrina! i am starting to feel less nervous about it, like i said i am not really self-conscious...i just dont think ppl who have never been big understand what it is like to be big. if that makes sense. i have been in 5 weddings and the brides i am friends with that are skinny had no idea how to pick out a BM dress for a bigger girl...it was embarrassing kind of because I didnt want to walk out in the store in a dress that was literally awful...i guess i am thinking along those same lines for photographers.

@miss tattoo...its not photoshopped, but one of my friends picnik'd it for me. so maybe thats why??? here is another some of me an a few of the girls i am gonna have be BM...and one of me and my brother who is gonna be an usher =]

OMG you will be FINE! More than fine! It must be the pinik thing or whatever. Your skin looks....I don't know in the original photo. I'm not trying to be rude!!!! I just didn't know if my screen got all unadjusted.

Your photographer isn't going to make you do anything you are uncomfortable with. They aren't (or at least shouldn't) shoot at angles that will unflatter you.

When I did my senior photos (OMG 10 years ago!) the studio photographer was always telling me to stick my chin out "like a turtle coming out of his shell." O_O Finally I asked him why he kept making me do it. I felt silly. He said it elongates that neck and doesn't cause a double chin. I wasn't even plus sized back then, but he said even the skinnest girl with no fat on her body can get a double chin if not posed right. That's always stuck with me and I've always done it.

All I can say is that don’t search a photographer who have experience of clicking pictures of plus size brides.........Just search a good and experienced photographer.........See, you are so pretty and trust me you will look more beautiful on your wedding day........And it needs experience of a photographer to make you look perfect in pictures........

An experienced photographer knows how to click pictures from which angles to make it perfect........

You're beautiful so don't say you're not photogenic. I am also a non-skinny girl (but on weightwatchters diet) to lose 30lbs and even then i will be a non-skinny girl. But girl! Be happy w who you are, find those clothes that hit the right spots, like Breezie-B said.

Ps - only do poses that you are also comfortable doing - if you are feeling insecure about how it may look - hopefully the photographer will have a digital camera and he will show you the pic.

GOOD LUCK!! and again - you are a beautiful bride to be!! You two are gorgeous together! Smiley smile

Carly I am the same size as you and you know what this is the way god intended us to be and if that shows in our pictures than we should be happy and blessed that god gave us more on our bodies for others to love. I dont always like the way I look but I have to remind my self that this is what he wanted. We are who we are and you look beautiful and you should be happy, Congrats and good luck Smiley smile

Carly you are beautiful! Like the suggestions say here, let your photographer know your concerns and wear something you feel comfortable and confident in. You are a beautiful woman. Work it girl!

I'm a bigger girl as well, close to your size. (between 16-18) I am not really self concious, but I like to know that my photos show my beauty.

I felt "fat" as well, but my photographer did a GREAT job!!! I adore our pictures.

Here's some tips she sent me:

Large, bold patterns can be distracting. So can text on shirts!

If body conscious, try wearing ¾ or full sleeve shirts instead of tank tops and tube tops. It is easier to push up a sleeve if warm

Girls, accentuating your waist with an accent belt or A-line shirt/dress can be very flattering

    Layers can be flattering

A shapely dress can be very flattering

Slightly darker shades will ensure that the focus is on your face, not on the bright shades in the photos

    For the visual learner: http://www.leeannmariephotography.com/2010/08/what-to-wear-to-an-engagement-session/

These are just some of her suggestions, and may not suit your style one bit! That's ok, but hopefully something in here helped!

Thank you sharissa! those are good tips...i will definately be saving those. i dont know if i am going to have a "professional" photographer or not. a girl i went to high school with is very talented. and she costs around $800 for engagement and wedding day coverage. so she doesnt have as much experience, maybe that is why i am nervous. but I cant afford $3000 for pictures or anything...thats like my whole wedding budget!

Maybe check out a female photographer, my husband and I shoot together a lot and if he shoots I pose and I know It seems I think more about body image in the shots. It is not just someone that is a little fluffy that you have to consider its height as well. I have had several couples that the Bride is much taller than the Groom so you want to have the Groom feel and look as important in his engagement photos with proper staging. Probably the key thing you can do is wear something that you are comfortable in, don't over dress or over do the makeup if thats not your normal style. The more relaxed you are in the session the better your photo shoot will come out. Good Luck you both look super cute just relax and have fun@

I know the feeling! I am hoping my photographer does a good job with us. I suggest wearing black and of course something you feel good in! The more uncomfortable you are the more it shows!

Ask specifically if the photographer has shot plus sized women, and if so, ask to see those pictures.

I think a simple black dress(perhaps long sleeves or three quarters) and black boots would be stunning.
