Definitely not needed -- especially in the social media age when most engagements are shared widely pretty quickly. Engagement parties used to actually be an opportunity to announce the engagement to people who otherwise wouldn't have known. It can be a fun option for those who want it, but absolutely not required.

I never had one because it was close to a holiday and I was going to see everyone regardless. But it’s a fun way to celebrate and the party planner in me is totally regretful I didn’t have something

Nice to have, but not necessary. You are already going to have a bridal shower, bachelorette party, and wedding, so not super important to have another party.
