Embellished Invites going through machine - even after hand cancelling??? Help!!!!

Melissa, on November 21, 2012 at 10:37 AM Posted in Planning 0 10

Hello all!

Our invitations are finished and ready to mail after the holidays. I took them to the post office to get the proper postage for the RSVP cards and outer envelopes.

While I was there, the postman noticed the heavy embellishment on the invitations (it's an adhesive strip of pearls and rhinestones over lace). He said that they wouldn't go through the machine. Of course, I panicked and explained that I would be getting them hand cancelled. After debating with another USPS worker, they informed me that they would hand cancel, but that the invitations *might* still go into a machine - causing them to possibly rip or wrinkle due to the bulkier embellishment.

What is your experience? Should I chance it? Or have the embellishment removed? How many times do wedding invitations have to go through a machine? Do they have to go through a machine if hand cancelled?

Any insight is GREATLY appreaciated!

Melissa

I'm confused about this hand-canceling thing. What does that mean?

MJ - will the machine rip them? Should I remove the embellishments?

    Thanks!

There are different machines that the post office uses. I don't know this for an absolute fact, however from all my researching that I had done about whether hand canceling was worth it (which I decided that it wasn't), I read in multiple places that hand canceling will only prevent them from going through the machine that cancels the postage. It will still go through various sorting machines along its way to its destination.

You could always send a test invite somewhere to a non local friend or family member and see how it arrives.

I had a kinda bulky embellishment on mine, though it was a fabric rosette trim. I used both inner and outer envelopes which helped protect mine. I know when I first posted my invites here on WW, I had many people insisting that they wouldn't mail without getting destroyed. They all arrived safely. (However my post office didn't warn me about them either so they didn't see them as a problem.)

Send just one out - mailed to yourself - and see what happens.

You can wait until Monday to mail the rest out.

    Thank you all!

I'll definitely mail one to myself, but I'm worried about the non-local friends and family. Does anyone know if it has to go through more machines depending on how far the final destination is?

Oh my, they sound beautiful! Embellishments like that belong on a boxed invitation. I would order boxes, or you risk the damages. Using inner/outer envelopes with liners may help provide more protection. The PO it leaves from can hand cancel (handle with care), but they cannot control what happens at every other PO they will be received at.

    Thank you @Affordable Wedding Invites!

Do you know where to order boxes? Does your company have them?

Yes they will be ripped up. I agree with the Goskell about the boxes.

I recommend the two piece folding boxes at Clear Bags

    http://www.clearbags.com/box/two-piece

You can also google "thai silk boxes" for a more polished look.

Boxed invites cost around $1 to mail, but many regular invitations cost this much also.
