Eloping!! Wedding Announcements?

Lauren, on May 22, 2019 at 11:46 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 8
Hi guys! So we’re eloping and so sooo happy about it. We’ve only told our parents and a few close friends and I wanted to get an announcement made out with one of our pictures from the elopement saying “we tied the knot” to send to all our friends, relatives, neighbors etc. I told my mom this and she said it looks like we’re asking for money by doing this. We don’t expect anything in return for sending these. It’s just meant to let people know we’re married! Just like a birth announcement or something. What is your opinion? If someone from your family eloped and you got a wedding announcement in the mail what would you think?

Honestly, I would feel like it was a little odd to be receiving a surprise wedding announcement for a wedding I wasn't invited to! Like, I was important enough for them to notify, but not important enough to invite?

I would call the people who are important to you to tell them directly! If they ask for photos you can send them. And/or make a post on social media. That feels a little less formal, so not like you're just looking for gifts!

I want to clarify that we’re eloping with just the two of us. Our photographer is going to be our witness so not even our parents are coming, so it’s not like some people got invited and some didn’t. I suppose I should call it a marriage announcement instead of wedding announcement since it is a true elopement and not a small wedding that some people won’t be invited to

It’s truly just to let people know we got married so they know 😃 that way no ones confused later on thinking we had a regular wedding that they weren’t invited to

Ah yeah that makes sense I guess. I would at least make sure to put on the announcement that it was an elopement!

I received one one time, a couple eloped & sent them out. They didn't have a registry or website so it didn't seem gift grabby to me. We still sent them a small one and a card though. As long as the announcement specifies "elopement" and not a wedding I wasn't invited to.

I agree with FutureMrsD. I'd want to know if my friends got married and it feels more personal than just a facebook announcement. As long as you aren't registered anywhere (and aren't asking for gifts) and it's stated as an "elopement" and not a wedding we weren't invited to, I think it's neat.

I would totally send it out, as long as there's no website or registry you're good! IMO, it's a good thing to do, you don't want people worried and waiting wondering if they're invited to a non existent wedding. Way more personal than social media, I'd be a little bummed to see it there. It seems the opposite of gift grabby, if I got one I'd go "cool, I guess I don't have to buy a gift." But having seen a few of these kinds of posts, I know I'm in the minority, maybe its generational or specific to region if this is weird or not.

We eloped, just the two of us... we mailed out announcements from Kauai on the morning of our wedding so they would be stamped with our wedding date. They had a tropical theme on the front (from minted), a photo of us on the back saying that we chose to elope, a description of the location, they were in our thoughts on that day and that we'll celebrate with everyone when we get back and a link to our wedding website. We did not have a registry or honeyfund. Everyone was so excited when they showed up in the mail (just a handful of people knew) and enjoyed the surprise. We had a house party later in the summer... still, no registry. And folks just brought bottles of wine and champagne and it was lovely.
