e-ring size question

Josh, on April 23, 2016 at 2:47 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 58

They say size matters, right?

What is the average center stone size for an engagement ring?

I got a 2.5 princess cut (4 c's almost as good as you can get) in a platinum band with an additional carat worth of round brilliant cut (6 stones total).

It shines like crazy, but the more I look at it the more I think it's too small.

I'm a guy. We aren't supposed to know these things lol. Am I just letting nerves get the best of me? Is a flawless 2.5 center (3.5 total) average? Should I go bigger?

In my opinion it's above average. I think that's amazing! I have a karat and a half.

Doing a quick Google search, the average size of engagement rings in 2015 seems to have been 0.9 ct. I think you're good.

Personally, I told FH that I didn't care if the ring came from one of those 50 cent dispensers or Walmart lol, it wasn't the ring that mattered or the size of the stone.

You know your partner best. It sounds like you picked a great ring!

Speaking as someone with a .39 carat ring that gets caught on a lot of stuff, 2.5 carats sounds like a major PITA. I also have skinny fingers so I feel like a ring that big would overwhelm my hand lol.

But that's just me and I'm weird. You know your partner best. It sounds like a gorgeous ring! :-)

I'm not trying to be rude, but this doesn't seem like a legitimate question... I've worked in the jewelry industry, a 2.5 ct flawless diamond is insanely expensive...

If this is a REAL post, yes, you're good. Best of luck!

To FutureMrsW: Well, it was purchased at BlueBile. I can send you the receipt and GIA report if you want. Yes, it was expensive. This isn't a money question. TBH, money isn't an issue and I'm not saying that to brag. I work hard for what I have. My question was about size. I wanted to get something nice. Not too little and not too much so it looked tacky. Also, while money isn't the issue here, I don't foolishly throw it around and I'm not a jewelry person. Was never into it. While my business partner has a Rolex that's covered in diamonds I wear a g-shock $99 watch. While my business partner drives up to the office in a Lamborghini, he parks next to my 6 year old F-150 truck. Material possessions do nothing for me. My question was legitimate. One reason I bought on BlueNile was because if I went to a local jeweler they would try to take advantage and sell me some ridiculously over priced stone that was gaudy based on why I am. Again, not boasting, just setting the picture. Buying online allowed me to be "just a number" basically. So naturally I'm going to buy flawless. If I asked this question at a local store they would tell me it was small and that I needed to go bigger. She has been with me before I had money. I could set a stone from the side of the road in a setting and it wouldn't change anything. I know she doesn't want it to look like an oversized disco ball. Ring size is 7. Just want to make sure that's decent. I'm very good at what I do...unfortunately it has nothing to do with diamonds Smiley smile

I definitely don't need to see a receipt. Smiley smile The initial post just seemed somewhat questionable, due to you being a new member with no photo. A lot of times, those posts aren't legit.

What I was trying to get across is that a FLAWLESS diamond is very rare. One that size even more so. I'm assuming you meant the stone is very high quality?

With that said, you clearly were looking for actual input on the ring you chose. You do have the ring, yeah? Does it look eye clean? The size is more than enough, do not worry about that at all! Like you said, you could give her a stone off the road and it wouldn't matter. Bluenile is reputable, so you shouldn't have to worry about the grading and certificate. Just make sure to insure it! Good luck! Let us know how it goes!

Thanks for the input. Cut is signature ideal. Color is D and clarity is vvs1. That was the highest grades available on the site at the time of purchase.

This question just makes me uncomfortable.... A 2.5 carat right sounds just lovey but, mind you, that's probably out of a loooooot of people's budget.

The ring shouldn't be about how big it is or how sparkly it is. It should symbolize how much you love her and your relationship. I know that sounds so cliché but that's what I believe.

And honesty, your response to FuturenMrsW just sounds like a humble brag. I can show you my rings receipt and GIA report if you want to too. But that's just in poor taste. Have one of your buddies or your FW friends talk to you if you think it could be "tacky...."

To me that's too big. Mine is a 1ct center stone and the enhancer he bought adds another .5ct. I seriously have bigger than average hands (big palms w/ long fingers) for a woman and it doesn't disappear on my hand whatsoever. IMO the clarity and all that other shit doesn't matter because unless it's a really bad diamond/you're a jeweler, you honestly can't tell with the naked eye if there are flaws in it. If it sparkles, she won't notice it. I've also heard that BlueNile is more of a ripoff than brick & mortar jewelry stores. Just some female input. Did y'all go shopping?

My 1 ct. fits my hand perfectly. The halo adds about a .5 ct. to the face size. Any bigger than that and I'd feel like I'm wearing the iceberg that sunk the titantic. My personal taste though. I'm more minimal. FH is more flashy so he decided to get the entire thing encrusted in diamonds. Total ct. weight is a little over 2. But that's my taste. I don't know your FW's and I don't know yours. What's important is that you both like it.

There are girls here with .25 ct. or no diamonds at all and they all love their rings just the same as I love mine. If you were looking for a bunch of ring snobs to analyze your purchase beyond "as long as you are both happy" you've come to the wrong place. If you came here to humblebrag you also came to the wrong place.

You're good. Unless you're a celebrity, 2.5 karats is well above average IMO. you're good and good luck! My ring also came from Blue Nile but I have a measly half karat platinum solitaire Smiley tongue !!

Edited because it's early and it's hard to type before coffee.

Whoa! I think my 1.72 ct center stone, 2.25 ct total e-ring is huge. Sounds like you picked an awesome ring! And, remember, it's the guy that matters- not the ring! Smiley smile

My ring is zero carats. because its not a diamond (okay, actually it has a diamond halo and side stones so it has carats. but I honestly have no flipping idea how many. and I dont care). Does the 2.5 carat diamond match your girlfriend's (not engaged yet, right?) personality? If yes, then its perfect.

Honestly, while beautiful I'm sure, a 2.5ct diamond on a platinum band just wouldnt be "me". Like PPs have said, its not about size. its about the overall ring reflecting her.

I think 2.5 center with 3.5 total sounds massive! I don't think you need to go bigger. She will love whatever you get her! Post pictures!!

The ring is a symbol of your unity not your wallet. I feel when people go big it is to show off. I personally could not wear 2.5 when my ring size is 5 1/2. Anymore I feel it's all about competition with whose ring is the biggest. I feel this is a brag post not a real question.

Weird for a guy to make an account here just to brag about the ring he bought. Pics or it isn't real.

My ring is 2 carats and I love it but I do feel sometimes like its flashy. I wouldn't want anything bigger.
