DYI salt for a Margarita bar

Shannon, on October 10, 2011 at 4:07 PM Posted in Planning 0 10

I want to have a margarita bar with 4 -5 different flavos, but I do not want to have a community use salt and/or sugar station. I would like to have it available for each person wanting salt and/or sugar to be able to have their own that they can re-use throughout the night. Any DYI ideas or even ideas on what to buy to offer this to my guests? Also if you have any ideas on how to make the Margartia bar better than ever, I would love to hear them!!!!!

I'm not sure how sanitary one glass being put into the same salt and or sugar container would be all night. Maybe I misread this though.

When we have midnight margarita parties with our friends we have the small paper plates available for them to sprinkle salt or sugar on to coat their rims... it gets kinda messy but I don't know of any that are packaged for single use ...

Thanks Mek Mek...I thought about doing that but I would have to have a lot of glasses available for guest to get a new one each time they refilled and wanted salt.

@Rae...That is what I am trying to avoid. Sorry I should of made myself a little more clear. I want to have the salt available and something for each guest to put salt on and salt their glasses, so no sharing a the same salt.

Victoria, That is exactly what I want but I want to create something that is not just a "paper" plate. I was hoping to decrease the mess buy having each guest get a new "plate" everytime they wanted another margarita.

I am not what you'd call the "creative one". Maybe a margarita bar is not the best idea but I am getting married cinco de mayo and although my wedding is not a cinco de mayo theme, I want my food and drink to be Mexcian, since my FH is.

I think this is such a fun idea! Definitely do the margaritas! I would have glasses already salted, or several plates at the bar for people to do it. Each time someone wants a new drink, they should be getting a new glass anyway, so I don't see it as unsanitary.

I don't know how your reception is being held, but if there is staff and a kitchen, they should be picking up empty glasses and replenishing them. Otherwise, you'd need hundreds of glasses.

Maybe you can use something like coasters, with a rim, that each person could fill on their own?

Ohhhhhh! Sorry, I follow now. :-)

Yeah, the idea of having maybe like little mini plates or something for them to pour salt and/or sugar into? I'm not sure how you would do it. Sorry.

I am also getting married on May 5. We chose that date because it is the 5 year anniversary of the day we met / our first date. Then, when talking to caterers, it seemed the cheapest menu we could get was Mexican Food. It didn't even dawn on us that it was Cinco de Mayo until one of our friends pointed it out, LOL... ANYWAYS! After all that, we decided to do a Margarita Bar, but I was also uncomfortable with the salt / sugar thing.

What are you doing for your wedding favors? I found some "individual cookie tins" on eBay that I purchased (we bought 150 of them @ $.20 each) and we are printing off labels to put on top of the tins. We are doing 100 salt tins and 50 sugar tins. It's a little pricey, but when you are combining your wedding favor and the salt/sugar issue in one, it isn't too pricey...

I am also providing 2 non-alcoholic margarita stations for my guests that don't drink. And for my bridesmaid / groomsmen gifts, we are doing personalized margarita glasses.
