Dyeing or painting a wedding dress

Hi all! I'd like to dye or hand paint my wedding dress for the big day. Hi all! I'd like to dye or hand paint my wedding dress for the big day. I found a great "blank canvas" for next to nothing(not terribly concerned if it doesn't turn out- I have back up options), and I'd love to give it some personality. I have lots of experience painting pictures, and at home dye jobs for things like sun dresses, but have never done something this big! It's a polyester fabric, and the back has a small train. Any tips, tricks or inspiration would be lovely!

Would this work on tulle? With the spray maybe? If it was just a light 1 coat thing?

    This is super intriguing.

I just wanted to stop in and say: That dress is gorgeous on you and is the perfect blank canvas. I can't wait to see what you do with it!

I agree with some of the other ladies. If you dye the dress, I hope you post pictures for all of us to see. Good luck.

You all are so sweet!!! I'll definitely post pictures when I'm done. I can't decide on a color- our wedding will be in a botanical garden, so really any color would probably be great! I think I'm leaning towards a pretty periwinkle blue or lavender, though. I'm planning on using the iDye for polyester.

@BoozyBaker, I would guess that it would work on tulle, just depending on the fiber content, of course. If you did the spray, you may want to have a layer of garbage bag or newspaper to protect the lining from getting spotty. I imagine that would be super pretty, though!

@Laura, I think this is the picture that you are referring to? You are right, it's from The Knot Summer edition. It was hand painted by artisans in Colombia. How do you even find someone like that?! I fell in love with this and while I am an artist I could never paint a dress. I considered dip dying though! Alex, I can't wait to see your creation!

Oooh I love this idea! You should dye your veil too! I'm obsessed with this one in rose gold...

OP, I'm so glad to see how amazing your drawings are. I'll be honest, there was definitely a part of me that was wondering if this was going to end in a Pinterest-fail, but seeing your concept drawings, omg you must must must post pics when it's done!!

@kerry YES! That is the dress I was thinking of! It is beautiful!

ETa: I love the blue. But I think I like the second one better for a wedding.

Omg, they are all beautiful! I would buy any one of them just because!

I do like #2 best for a wedding though.
