I would actually take it to a professional to do. Polyester is hydrophobic which makes it extremely difficult to dye. I would imagine you're not going to end up with a deep burgundy that you may be envisioning. A professional may have some techniques/products that may help the dye absorb into the fabric. Good luck!

Polyester is difficult to dye - it inherently repels water so you have to use a particular type of dye for it to take. It’s also worth noting that it probably won’t go as dark as you want it to, if you’re talking about burgundy, plus the tulle is likely to take the dye differently and not end up the same colour as the rest of the dress. I’d probably not do it myself and find someone who can do it for me. Theatre wardrobe departments would be where I’d start - even if they can’t help you, they will probably know someone who can.

Nicole, Thank You for that advise. I was thinking the same thing. But then I was like who does professional dyeing of fabrics. Time to do some homework.

Like the previous posters said, I would bring it to someone who can look at it and tell you if it can be done professionally. It’s not always just the dress that you have to worry about the dye holding to, but the thread used in the seams and the lace. It may not all hold the color the same. However, if you didn’t spend much on the dress or will have no use for it otherwise, I would definitely try it! Worst that happens is you have to get a new dress, which is the alternative anyway. Good luck!

Thank You Meagan, I love it too but not so much the white part. Hopefully can find a great place to dye it.

    Jeanie,

Your absolutely right, it was a cheap dress I paid 20 dollars for it. If it does not work out, have other plans for it.

It’s a cute dress! As others have said, polyester doesn’t dye well but I want to add something my seamstress told me since I plan on dyeing my silk dress after the wedding. No matter what fabric it is, tulle is going to dye different than lace. One is going to be lighter than the other. Something to keep in mind! Good luck hun, that dress would look so pretty in burgundy.

Smiley heart Thank You, I have decided to just have my dress dry cleaned . It would cost more than what I paid for the dress to get it the color I want.
