Drink tokens

Angela, on May 14, 2013 at 6:05 PM Posted in Planning 0 22

Hi all,

Our reception drinks package is that guests receive a drink on arrival, 1/3 bottle of wine during the meal & a glass to toast.

There will also be an option for guests to buy drinks at the bar.

We are looking to also maybe put a tab on the behind the bar that would give guests 2 drinks each (either wine, beer or soft drink). To regulate the tab and make sure everyone gets their fair share we're looking at giving guests 2 drinks tokens each.

Our budget cant extend to an open bar.

What are your thoughts on the token idea? Have you seen this done at a wedding before?

Thanks! Xx

    My friend was recently married, and she had drink tickets printed. It worked great for her! I say go for it!

    I feel like things could get complicated with the drink token. Could you do open bar for an hour and then do cash bar the rest of the night?

    I've been to a wedding that used drink tickets. The venue had tickets sold at a desperate table in one colour. Bride had a different colour of tickets at her disposal. So, they paid for all the yellow tickets at the bar at the end of the night, and blue meant they were already paid for by guests. She just used 50/50 tickets. Worked well.

    I'd rather be given drink tokens than a cash bar.

    We've been planning on doing two drink tickets each. If a few people drop off, we may go for 1 hour open bar. My dilemma with that is with the 2 drinks, they can have them whenever they want but the open bar is only during cocktail hour.

    I think tokens would work... I'd rather have a 2 drink limit than having to pay for drinks at a wedding. But, I'd also only expect the alcohol to be limited to the tokens. I'd think that soda/water would be free.

    FH and I joked that we may need to give one of his sister's fake drink tokens so she doesn't take advantage of the open bar. She tends to go overboard.

    We are doing the 2 tickets each thing. Bp is 4 and parents of course. After that its cash and full liquor whereas our tickets will only cover up to the $6 glass of wine. If they want mixed, they'll use both tickets, but get a specific color ticket back from the bar worth only a beer. Our venue charges for soda so I've decided that will be open range.

    I think that drink tickets are the way to go over a cash bar for sure.

    I tend to agree with "Just add Coffee" I always think that an invite have some type of food and drink. Doesn't mean it has to be alcohol but should have something to offer that is unlimited. The drink tickets are a great alcohol alternative to an open bar. On a side note, I just attended a baby shower that had bottled water. On each table were packets of Crystal Light in a variety of flavors. This way guests were offered water or the Crystal Light. Just a thought.

    I probably wouldn't charge for soda and water but def. the token thing is a good idea for any alcohol drinks.

    Thanks for feedback guys. I'll go ahead with the tokens.

    water will be free throughtout, im sorry to seem stingy, the tokens and cash bar will also be on soft drinks. Reason being to limit costs for us and they are already getting alot with the welcome, meal and toasting drinks.

    Thanks again for feedback.

    Xx

    Ouch only water is free?

    Can you cut costs by having a dry wedding (no alcohol including token drinks) so non alcoholic drinks are free to guests? This would be my suggestion.

    I see no issue with it honestly

    (do people who dont drink get pop in replacement of the drinks in the package? - only I went to a wedding with a drinks package like that once and when I asked for pop instead of the wine that was given I was told I would have to pay - I have no issue with cash bars but when some drinks to some people are free and then I have to pay for it..)

    Haha dry wedding with our friends and family is as good as not having a wedding all. But thanks for the suggestion.

    Yep they wil be able to replace alcohol drinks with non-alcoholic ones in the package drinnks and tokens.

    Part of me feels like people are their to celebrate our marriage not to get wasted. Haha. So with the package they get 4 drinks plus 2 tokens...6 drinks on us. Thats enough..surely :-)

    I personally think you should find a way to pay for non-alcoholic drinks to provide something free beyond water. However if you still decide to stick with this plan, make sure that guest are informed and clear that it will be a cash bar beyond the 2 drink tokens, for all drinks, prior to your wedding. I personally never have cash on me, and going to a wedding even if it was a cash bar, I would expect sodas to be included into my meal.

    I only count five drinks from you.. lol

    ---> receive a drink on arrival

    --->1/3 bottle of wine during the meal

    --->a glass to toast

    ---> drink token 1

    ---> drink token 2

    What about those hwo do not want to consume alcohol for their first 3 drinks "on you"? Can these be replaced with some non-alcoholic?
