Dress shopping sucked!!

FutureMrsGuzman, on August 1, 2015 at 7:31 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 44

Most of the dresses I liked were in a size too small for me to try on. Actually 2 dresses I specificlly came for! On top of that I had to try on size 14 dresses! So now I'm feeling so fat and unattractive. I can't try on the dresses I love and my dress size is huge. Anyone else discouraged by their dress size? Not to mention nothing looked good on me, the dresses were heavy and overwhelming. Can anyone relate? I thought it was going to be fun and magical....not!! Smiley sad

It took me a while until I had fun dress shopping. I'm usually a street size 6/8, but I had to go into the plus size and get a 14 which actually fits me almost perfectly. I went to 2 high end salons first. I kept getting the "You have plenty of time to lose weight to fit into the dress!" Um. fuck you. I'm fine with how I am. Then I went to the Brides Against Breast Cancer event. That was a total mess. I was at the point where I'd rather just order a dress online and call it quits. I had a friend who wouldn't let me just give up though. We started going to off the rack salons and they were SO nice! Dresses came in all sizes and styles and they were all in perfect condition. I ended up with a dress I had reeeeeeally wanted, but was way too expensive brand new. I got a huge discount on it and I couldn't be happier! Try an off the rack store. I was treated so much better.

Was this your first time ? If it is, don't be discouraged, just look at it as an appointment that gives you an idea pig what you like and are looking for. My first appointment, I was looking for white dresses and all the two boutiques sold were ivory even a dress that I loved... my mother and I went into a store a few days later just to see what they had and wasn't expecting anything from it.... BUT I walked out with a dress. It's not always like the movies we see, lol, but when you do, it WILL be AWESOME !!!

Don't stress it too much, I think most wedding dresses run smaller than normal sizes so that means nothing about how you look. My dress shopping experience was similar. At DB everything seemed so unflattering, I went to two other places after that and it wasn't as bad but I didn't love any. Last I went to Anthropologie and surprisingly I thought every dress I tried on was flattering- that's where I got my dress. Don't get discouraged!

I'm normally a size 12 and I fit perfectly into a size 12 A-line dress (which I bought) but I couldn't even squeeze my hips into a size 16 trumpet gown! So I wouldn't be discouraged, I swear wedding sizes are just made up... haha

Wedding dress sizing is pretty horrible for the self-esteem. Go in expecting to need a bigger size than you usually wear. David's Bridal sizing is pretty accurate, but, in almost any dress you'll buy bigger and alter down. It's really hard when you don't fit the sample sizes as well. Give it another shot. Do your hair and makeup so you already feel like you look good. Don't worry about what size you try on. Try lots of different silhouettes. It doesn't matter what size dress you're in, just that you feel beautiful. The size is a pretty random number, ESPECIALLY in bridal sizing.

Just have to pop in to agree with what the other posters have said--wedding dresses almost always run way way way way smaller than street sizes. Don't even bat an eyelash at that number, FutureMrsGuzman. Smiley smile Don't worry, you'll find your dress! Best of luck!

I have to agree! Wedding dress sizes are weird. I wish women's clothing would just be easy for everyone when it came to sizes (one can only hope, right?).

Now you know the wedding dress size, I would call other bridal shops that might carry the ones you want and ask if they have that dress in a size to try on!

Don't worry about the number! I would have cried had I worried about it. I wear a size 10 in street clothes. My waist was a size 12 in bridal but my hips were a size 22! So we ordered a size 20 and my dress fits like a glove!

Don't stress yourself out over that size tag, because there definitely different then street sizes..and when you go to order your dress you typically order based off of your largest measurement via the designers size chart..if you have specific dresses that your looking for call around to other salons to see what sizes they may have and of course all dresses will fit definitely. You'll find the perfect dress Smiley smile

My first experience was horrible too, the consultant didn't listen to anything i was saying and kept bringing me dresses that were above my price range! she was rude and i had a terrible time. but i didn't give up and went to the store across the street and had a totally different experience, it was like she could read my mind and the 2nd dress i tried was the one i bought!

Call around. Some stores only had single sample sizes but others I went to had more options. I had much more fun when I went to a store that had a variety of options.

I totally know how you feel. I had to get a dress size 14 which I worked my butt off to not be "plus size" anymore so it was tough. But just keep in mind that bridal gowns run small so don't let the size trip you up!

Not to detract from your annoyance, but all of my dress appointments sucked. I have to say though, that David's Bridal dress sizes were the same as my street size, so that part didn't get me down at least. :-/

I have heard from pretty much everywhere, esp SYTTD, that designer wedding dresses routinely run about 2 sizes or so smaller, so I would totally not worry about the size on the tag.

Also, like Danielle said, corset dresses are really flattering for most everyone, and once you have it, it allows for fluctuations up or down, and less alterations in the bodice even! I wish my dress had been corset style, as I had to have it taken in after losing some weight, so it would've been nice to save some money there.

Like you said, you're happy with how you look, and you will look gorgeous that day no matter which dress you wear! Smiley smile

Did you go to David's Bridal? If so that explains it. They seem to carry samples in the much smaller sizes. I went there and was only able to try on 4-5 dresses. At Alfred Angelo I tried on probably around 15 or so. Don't pay attention to size, they vary by designer and also seem to run large in bridal. Just remember YOU'RE beautiful!

Don't get discouraged!! I am a street size 4 and she told me my wedding dress size was a size 10. She warned me before she told me my size that wedding dress sizes are not normal sizes.

Don't get fixated on numbers.... sizes or scales!! If you feel good, you will look good! And i'm not sure what salon you went to... but the majority of the salons I went to had tons of 14-16 as their samples. Try a different salon! Don't worry about sizes.. and for the dress you wanted to try on... call a different salon that has it and see what size they have! Smile and move on Smiley smile
