Dress help: sewing?

Genevieve, on November 5, 2010 at 11:25 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 7

Let's start with: I have sewn on a button before, not much else. And my mom who hates nail guns and owns two embroidery machines is currently on a cruise ship in the caribbean for the next two weeks. So I'm hoping one of you ladies will help.

I picked up my dress from my friend and now have my dress. And I was looking it over before trying to get it cleaned and found a few spots where the thread broke and the beading could very easily fall off. So I'd like to fix the beading so that it doesn't fall off. Normally I'd take it to the seamstress my mom picked out for me, but I can't do that until january probably. Right now and for next two weeks the dress & I are in cali. Then the two of us go to oklahoma for a week, then I travel for the entire month of december. And I figure I should clean it before january, but I'm concerned they will not take fix the loose threads and I'll loose a lot of beads.

I think this is better left to the pros! When eyou take it into get it cleaned ask them to fix the areas of concern (even if they fix the "temp" until your final fitting..) And I think I am learning something here.. Are you suppsed to have the dress cleaned before your final fitting??

Oh, I guess I wasn't clear, my dress is my friend's wedding dress. She just got married in it over the weekend. Hence wanting to get it cleaned since it's been worn and is not new.

Take it to a local tailor that is recommended by someone in Cali. They will be able to clean it after fixing it, and if they don't think that's the right route to take, take your dress to someone else.

Any of the places near me claim no liability for any detailed work. If it falls off, they could care less. You MIGHT get a sorry.

I know you're preferred seamstress is unavailable, but I'm sure you can find another one that will do a good job.

I'd say if you aren't comfortable touching it with a needle, take it to a good tailor. They should at least be able to provide you with a temporary fix that will secure the loose beading until your preferred tailor can get to it.

Because it's a wedding dress, I would take it to a tailor/seastress to fix it.

Beading isn't too complicated to fix if it's just a few broken threads. Use fine monofilament or white thread and a fine needle. Ask the ladies at the fabric store which ones would be best. Tie a tiny knot at the end and hide your first stitch under the existing beadwork. Push the needle through the bead, then stitch into the fabric, catching only a few threads. Beads, then fabric, and repeat. Finish in the same way you would if you were sewing on a button. Good luck!
