Dress Alterations

Madison, on June 9, 2021 at 4:31 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 7

Hi! So I've looked online and can't seem to find the answer I'm looking for. I bought my dress in March off the rack and it fits pretty much perfectly. I am hoping to lose a few pounds so it will fit more comfortably, but otherwise it's perfect! The train is very long though so I would need a bustle for it. When should I take it in to get this done?

Not more than 2 months before the wedding, especially if you are planning to change your body (like losing weight) But you can absolutely, and should, find a tailor and make the appointment as soon as you can. In my area, the best tailors are booked out way in advance. I recently booked an appointment for Jan 2022 with one of my area's top tailors, just so she wouldn't get all booked up! This is totally unnecessary in some areas though! I just live in the center of a big city.

If I were you, I would find some recommendations for tailors you love and speak to them about when to book

First fitting should be about 2 months prior, with your final fitting one month out. After your final fitting, don’t lose any more weight, otherwise your dress won’t fit properly.

It depends on the complexity of the work being done, but I agree with the others that 2 months out would be appropriate. But DO get in and book as they've said - I had to book my first appointment a month ahead of when I needed it scheduled for!

Honestly I would start looking for one now. There are plenty of seamstresses and tailors right now that are backed up with the wedding boom.

Never hurts to get a jump start on it in my opinion. And you're right in the window if you're getting married in October.

Perfect! Thanks so much everyone! I’ll reach out this week to a seamstress and get a date set for 2-3 months before!

Totally agree. My bridal salon ended up telling me they couldn't do my alterations when I went in for my first fitting, which was only 6 months before my wedding. It was NOT easy to find someone qualified who could work on my dress and I'm lucky I did. I just got to pick it up today and my wedding is on Friday.
