On my way to work, there was the topic on a Detroit radio station about the tackiness of dollar dances which made me happy haha because they were talking about how awkward it is for guests, have the wedding you can afford, and your wedding is not a fundraiser.

Someone called and said they had to watch a "Dollar Dash" in which during dinner, they were all asked to hold cash up, and the bride and groom had 60 seconds to sprint around the room yanking cash from their guests hands...

Another person boasted that they had two buckets, and guests were to put money in them if they were a U of M or MSU fan and guests got bragging rights if their team had the most money. She totally got blasted on air lol.

Anybody hear of anything like this? It was news to me. Besides the dollar dance, money tree, and honeymoon jar, what other tacky money grabbing schemes have you seen at a wedding?

Yes, there was a thread on here not too long ago from a bride wondering what money "traditions" everyone was doing and whether she should do the "dollar dash"' instead of the money dance, or maybe in addition to.

I had never heard of it until that thread. She also talked about a Cake Smash - which, according to her, was also for money!!!! Something about guests putting money in jars for either the bride or groom depending on who they thought would get more cake smashed in their face, or something.

That thread was only like 2-3 weeks ago. Surprised no one remembers it.

JaKLyn...one day I'm going to compile all of these tacky wedding stories and put them in a book. I know it would be a best seller, and there's sooooo much material out there. I don't know whether to laugh at your story and shake my head in shame. I wish they had hired me to write their invitation:

Guess what we're about to do?

We're getting married at the zoo!

Now listen up, 'cause this is key,

you'll have to pay an entry fee.

You'll have to pay for dinner too,

but that's okay, cause it's the zoo!

We don't want a bunch of trash,

just give us cards filled with cash.

PS: We've made up cute little animal themed menu cards for your convenience. We have selected meals to fit every budget. 'The Hummingbird' is a mere $22.95, or you can enjoy a huge portion of yummy with 'The Hippo' for $49.95.

Emily, I definitely don't remember that thread! Was it over a weekend? I usually don't come on here on the weekends much and I feel like I miss some gems.

I've always wanted to know what the couples look like after their dollar dance/dash/mason jar/bucket.

Ugh. The worst thing I've seen was a couple auctioned off the garter instead of doing a garter toss. A family member was a legit auctioneer, so that part was cool, but it just made my skin crawl. He even walked around the guests trying to get people to bid on it. It was gross.

FH once casually mentioned the idea of a honeymoon jar on the bar instead of a tip jar. I think the look I gave him told him all he needed to know about that idea.

Never heard of a dollar dash. I know some cultures have money related things at weddings, like the dollar dance. Where I am from, even if you don't plan for one, the guests will start one for you. I managed to not have one by having a day time wedding with only soft background music.

There is the pinning of money on the brides dress in Mexican and Filipino cultures.

There is the Nigerian custom of being showered with money.

There is no give money as a vote for cake smashing. There is no foot race for dollars. I don't love the money dance. I hate it actually. I do expect to see it at most weddings I attend at home because it is the tradition. I don't expect it to stop. I just don't get why people from other ethnic backgrounds jump on the bandwagon. What is it that your own culture does that you are ignoring to get some cash?

    Ew to the cake smash.

So a friend of mine posted about this on FB since she heard it too, I commented agreeing with her how lame dollar dances are, naturally it shows up on my feed and my FMIL saw it. Texts me and says, "You know, since you're paying for so much of your wedding it's okay to have a dollar dance to get a little bit more money..."

So now I need to make sure that when I meet with my DJ before the wedding, I need to make it perfectly clear under no circumstances will they announce a dollar dance no matter who asks because I see her pulling that shit. YAY.

The dollar dance is a "thing" where im at so I did consider it (and I think Emily may be talking about me with that post) In the past weddings the dollar dance has been done and my family asked about it.....I dont feel comfortable doing such things....I dont ask people to come to a BBQ and then run around asking for money...so its the same thing. I have since decided to NOT do any of this! Theres also another one of an auction of the guarder and bouquet.......I told my DJ already on the form he gave us to fill out on the line for the dollar dance song....that it will not happen
