Dollar Dance?

So we are confirming details with our DJ this week and I'm not the fence about the dollar dance. I feel like it could be fun, but also a bit awkward. Thoughts? Any pros/cons?

My mom's family is full Polish and I never realized this was a thing before coming to the forums.

Unless it's cultural it is most certainly tacky

Please don't do this! It's rude and yes, very very awkward.

I'm half Filipina and my FH is Tongan and money dances are a part of both of our cultures. Even though I hate the thought of dancing and getting money thrown at me, I will be surprising him with a Tongan dance. As for the dollar dance I'm pretty sure someone will be waiting around with a dollar crown and sash to start it, even though we will not be announcing it, it's just expected on my Filipino side.

Reading the comments on this post is hillarious. The dollar dance doesn't in any way represent what people are making it out to be. In my experience, the bridal party sets up at beginning of dance floor with shots and a bucket to collect money, people form a line pay $1, get a shot and proceed to dance with Bride then Groom. All weddings I've attended that did this had an open bar, so $1 isn't gonna break anyone's bank account, people can choose whether or not to participate. Plus it's a great way to spend one on one time with your guests, without having to mingle around and be stuck talking to those particular guests that are long winded (haha).
    I say DO IT!
Typically music is slow, not like you're turnt up at some strip club!

I think it's fun! It's not tacky, I've been to a few weddings where they do this and it was just all out fun!

It gives the chance for the bride and groom to interact with everyone and you don't HAVE to give them anything, you can dance without paying... it's just a more fun way to accept your gifts.

I'm doing one at my wedding, and it will be clear you don't have to pay to dance if you want too but just get up and have fun! Stop being such negative people, or so cheap! If spending a dollar hurts you that bad, maybe you need to reevaluate your finances, lol. It's the same concept as the honeymoon jar, no one is forcing you to put money in it... this is just a more interactive way to do it, and like I said NO ONE IS FORCING YOU. So get over it, it's not tacky Smiley smile

My FH wanted to do one but I thought he was poking fun at me being a stripper lol. It’s a Midwest thing and his friends did them but no one in my family would know what to do so we scraped it. I say go for it only if people invited would know what it is and expect it. It sounds like it’d be hard letting people know ahead of time to bring cash if it’s not common in your circle

There are really strong and harsh objections to the dollar dance. Just wondering if the same people are opposed to the popular birthday tradition of pinning a $10 or $20 bill to the celebrants shirt at work to encourage their coworkers to pin more money to them....

Pinning money to me seems like a customary practice. Dollar dance seems not to be. To each his own though.
