Dollar Dance?

Colleen, on October 16, 2017 at 2:15 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 91

So we are confirming details with our DJ this week and I'm not the fence about the dollar dance. I feel like it could be fun, but also a bit awkward.

Thoughts? Any pros/cons?

Ooh, it's been a while since this topic resurfaced.

Still a no unless it is culturally ingrained and you are cool with it.

I don't know what a "dollar dance" is but everything about the name sounds atrocious.

The dollar dance is where for a few songs only the bride and groom are on the dance floor and people line up and give them a dollar to dance with them for a little while. A lot of people in my family have done it (large family) and seem to have a great time, but I just can't help but feel like it might be awkward or tacky because of the money part.

This is done at all the weddings in my area, but I personally don't like it. Just go an enjoy mingling with each guest at their table.

Keisha, Today has just been full of No's. I almost wanna go sit in a corner and cry.

I'm not paying to dance with anyone, not even a stripper.

OP are you Polish, Mexican, or Filipino? Or did you just hear you can make quick cash doing a dollar dance?

Joe is 100% Polish. When this was brought up he said "I'm Polish, not a putana." Score for the Italian we are indoctrinating in him!

I went to a wedding once in another state that had a cash bar, dollar dance, AND a garter dance.

You could just FEEL the awkwardness in the room.

    Most people left after dinner.

We stayed because we had never seen a dollar dance or garter auction in person.

    It was bad.

FH started to take out his wallet because he felt like he had to and I stopped him REAL QUICK.

They got a much smaller check with their card than other weddings we go to..

I went to a wedding last night that did one. People were throwing ones like they were at a strip club. The poor BMs were picking them up off the floor for the bride and it was just so sad and weird.

The dollar dance is just the worst IMO. It's gross and money grabby.

Call me old school but the only time I want dollar bills thrown at me is if I'm providing a service, like removing my clothing while on an elevated platform.

There are some cultures where this is socially acceptable. If you are part of that culture, you would know.

If you are leaning towards tacky, its because it is. Listen to your gut.
