I know I will probably get some sort of heat for this but I am hoping for some honest opinions. My FH father passed away almost two years ago unexpectedly. He was suffering from Multiple Sclerosis from almost 10 years and FMIL and FSIL came home from shopping one day and found him. They couldn't determine a cause of death - just that he had MS. We wanted to do something to honor him at the wedding - so we thought maybe we would do the dollar dance - but instead of keeping the money for ourselves we would donate it all to the Illinois Chapter of MS. We would make an announcement explaining this to our guests, and why we hold the MS Society so dearly to our hearts. The dollar dance is a fairly common tradition in my FH family but not mine.

No matter how I feel about the dollar dance, it's going to happen at the bulk of weddings in my family. Like it. Hate it. Keep the money. Give it to charity. It's going to happen.

Seeing that it is expected (on his side) and will be done, I don't see a single thing wrong with letting people know you are donating the money to honor FH's Dad. Honestly, I think that takes some of the discomfort of the dollar dance away a bit. Not completely since I loathe the dollar dance. Well, you get what I mean.

Incidentally, when the dollar dance is the norm in your area, people are bringing cash for it anyway. It's a cultural thing and it is expected. No one has to participate. I didn't do it at my wedding. People were disappointed that it didn't happen.
