Does anyone know of / use a good at-home jewelry cleaner that's safe for keeping engagement rings shiny?!

bikerbride, on October 22, 2009 at 1:21 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 17

Just curious if any of you know of and/or have used a good at-home jewelry cleaning product that can work for keeping an engagement ring (aka, precious stones & metals) clean between professional cleanings? Thanks

Baily, Banks, and Biddle gave me jewelry cleaner when I got my rings so I use that and it's wonderful. Of course whenever I'm in the mall I stop in for a pro steam cleaning. You can ask you jeweler for something. Sharper image has this sonic jewelry cleaner that I think will be on my Christmas list this year. It uses plain water but is supposed to work great. I know my sonic toothbrush does amazing things for cleaning my teeth so we'll see! I'll let you know how it works

I reccomend caling the store where your ring was purchased, they will be able to tell you what is best to use and how to do it without damaging your ring orvoiding warranty.

This doesn't answer your question, but I don't clean my ring on a regular basis- when I wash my hands my rings gets super shiny as long as take them off to apply lotion, that dulls the shimmer a bit. Also, when I go to the mall all the jewelry stores offer to clean your rings for free. It only takes 5 mins. or so, they just throw it in the sonicator.

Just a hint, in case you don't plan on being a routine cleanser like myself.

Believe it or not.....TOOTHPASTE. I know it sounds weird, but I was at a mall with my Aunt about to buy jewelry cleaner and she stopped me and said at least try the toothpaste. Well she was right as usual.

I usually take an old toothbrush and toothpaste to clean mine. It really does work on pretty much any of my jewelry.

I was told by a jeweler to NEVER use toothpaste, and soap often leaves soap scum. but windex or other glass cleaner can keep your diamons shiny. just a quick dip and a toothbrush to scrub it clean. then rinse and scrub it with warm water untill all the windex has been wiped away.

Toothpaste works great on metal to shine it up, not so sure about stones though.

Save your money on commercial jewelry cleaner. I worked for a jeweler for a long time and they always used water ammonia and DAWN dish liquid in their ultrasonic cleaner. I can't stand it if my jewelry isn't spotless. I have found a solution I like better and it dosn't smell awful; I keep a plastic jar filled with water and a generous squirt of Suave Daily Clarifying Shampoo and a squirt of DAWN. EVERY night I take off the rings, bracelet and earrings I wear every day and drop them in the jar. In the morning I fish them out and rinse in hot water and plunk them on a paper towel to dry. Word to the wise - CLOSE THE SINK STOPPER - you don't want to have to take the plumbing apart - I learned the hard way. You can brush them if you want (I use a baby toothbrush) concentrating under the stone but if you clean them this way everyday you only need to brush once a week.

Diamonds naturally attract grease and oil so when you use hand lotion, or when you are cooking or doing housework

Cont..Take your rings off; they will be easier to keep spotlessly clean and they will last you a lifetime.

I agree no toothpaste - it won't hurt the diamonds but will dull the gold/plat and can scratch softer stones.

If you have emeralds in your rings do not soak them - most emeralds are treated and cleaners that break down oils can ruin this treatment. Also Never let anyone steam clean your emerald - they cannot take extremes in temperature.

Dremel makes a jewelery polishing kit that works well. I'd steer clear of soap and water, like your shower, what dulls the surfaces is soap scum buildup from showering, doing your hair, dishes, etc.

I use dawn soap. I always heard not to use toothpaste because its abrasive and can scratch gold.

I also use a lint free cloth to shine it up.
