Do we bother with wedding cake?

mrswinteriscoming, on February 11, 2020 at 12:34 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 14

Hi all!

I am currently planning my wedding for December and evaluating whether to have a cake or not. We are having a big wedding with the bells and whistles but my budget is pretty average so I am very much on a beer budget with champagne taste.

We are having a three course meal that includes dessert served at the reception + bringing extra foods for the table so that people are actually fed properly (portions are not likely to be huge when considering that lots will be drinking heavily!).

As dessert is included, I am wondering if anyone will actually eat cake? I personally love dessert but I make any excuse for it haha, not everyone is the same though.

Also contemplating having a fake cake for decoration and then just getting a slab cake that is actually served to the guests - need to discuss whether that’ll be a cheaper alternative we can look at.

Did anyone here have cake + 3 course meal? Was it eaten?

thanks!

We didn't have 3 courses. But we had an hour long cocktail hour with 4 passed appetizers & a stationary appetizer (big portions & filling food), then salad & bread at the table, then an entree with two proteins & two sides. We had a full open bar, dessert & midnight snacks. We didn't have a full cake, we had smaller bites like cupcakes and brownies and cookies. A lot of them were eaten!

I have a relatively small budget and hate cake but love cake cutting photos! So we decided on a small sweetheart cake (which is very budget friendly) and cupcakes which Are also very budget friendly. We will also do other desserts on a dessert tableSmiley smile maybe do something similar to that??

I did a cake anyway even though dessert for me was also included. However I will say most of my dessert wasn't eaten because of the cake

I sawI say cake but that is because I love cake but that is a personal decision. If you do not care for the cake then I would not do it.

Our venue also serves dessert and a late night snack. We are skipping cake.

We are just doing the tiniest one tier cake just to cut the cake and only enough for the wedding party to eat. Everyone else is getting the desserts that is going with our caterer.

Our venue offered the same option - three course meal with dessert. At first, I had not planned on having a cake, since dessert was already included. But the more friends and family said I would probably regret not having a cake, and the more I saw pictures of beautiful wedding cakes, the more I realized I wanted to have one. So I spoke to my venue and rather than serving a dessert they are going to let us choose an additional side. So rather than a salad, entrée, one side, and dessert, now each guest will get salad, entree, and 2 sides. And then we will serve the wedding cake as dessert. That way my guests will get more hearty dinner food, and also wedding cake Smiley smile

I think dessert would take place of the cake! As a guest, I don’t think I’d want dessert and cake haha

My restaurant venue is offering a similar thing. After a cocktail hour with hors d'oeuvres, we'll be doing a seated 3 course dinner--salad course, family-style main course, and then plated cake dessert.

Because of the already-included dessert course, we opted not to get a wedding cake. Instead we're doing French macarons (displayed in 2 tiered towers), which will serve as sort of a "cake display" and guest favors.

We skipped cake. We had a nice alternative dessert that everyone raved about, and no one seemed to miss cake!

You can do a small cake just to cut or do cupcakes but if they are already doing desert then you can just a small two tiered cake for cutting. You can even make it yourself. Two stacked one small one medium sized white cakes with flowers and candles around it.

I’m a hobby baker funny enough but I don’t want the stress of making our own cake especially for so many people.
I think we will go the route of getting a traditional cake after all
