do 'timeless' wedding dresses really exist?

Aronna, on March 19, 2013 at 5:58 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 1 16

I hear it all the time, brides wanting to make sure that they pick a dress where they won't look at it in 20 years and say 'what was I thinking' because it was styless for the time they got married.

Does ANY dress fit that bill? I'm getting married for the second time and my first dress was very close to what Princess Kate and Dutchess Kate wore. it was beautiful, but now I sometimes wish I'd been more daring and stylish.

styles change all the time. I can't picture any wedding picture being 'dated' in some way.

so how many of you are going for timeless, and how many are just saying 'heck with it' and wearing what is considered over the top stylish now?

I'm designing my dress as we speak, and though it's going to have couture embelishments no matter what, I go back and forth between over the top couture full dress or something sleeker and more 'glamorous'

so what are you ladies wearing. and why did you choose that

I'm getting something that I consider timeless. I want my kids to look at our wedding pictures and not make fun of us. But I do have a trendy dress to change into for our exit.

I'm getting a dress that makes me happy, I don't really care what people think of it in twenty years. Think of the dresses in the 80s, they were thought to be the 'in-thing' but now everyone seems to laugs at them. I feel the whole 'you wore that!?' thing is nearly inevitable since styles are always destined to change.

What Amy said. If I showed you the "timeless" dress I wore in the 80's, you'd laugh. I regret not just getting the dress I liked because I thought it would look dated in pictures. Heck, looking back at those pictures now, I look dated and it's not just the dress that was going to stand up to time .... it's the hair, makeup, and I look much younger so yup my kids laugh anyway.

This time, I got the dress that I like and that makes me feel good now

I'm wearing a simple but elegant ball gown. Ball gowns have been in style for a very loooong time. I'm happy with it and that is what counts anyway.

I did that was a MAJOR thing that was on my list. I wanted a dress that wouldn't be dated in 20 years.

I stayed pick up and truth be told I didn't like how it looked on my any ways.

I stayed away from another with ruffle anything.

I went with a satin ball gown, it's what I loved and felt amazing in.

I picked something I loved. We all think styles will last forever, but they really don't. And like MinD says, it's not just the dress that dates you. It's the hair and makeup too. Who knows what people will be doing in 20 years? Frankly, I don't care. As long as I feel beautiful now, I don't mind Smiley smile

My mom's wedding dress I would have worn if I could fit into or it hadn't been stained

Yes, I think they do! I think Kate Middleton's dress was timeless. More simple, less fashionable/ trendy dresses don't look dated, in my opinion. Different brides have different tastes-- let's not knock the ones who want something "timeless" because we wanted a different look!

I think the closest you can get to timeless is simple. A dress that is trendy is not going to be timeless (obviously).

I'd like to think my dress is pretty timeless. Definitely agree that Kate Middleton's dress is timeless, nothing trendy or crazy... My dress is pretty similar to the shape of my grandmother's dress which is actually from her grandmother, just a few modern touches.

Put it this way, I didn't want to look back 20 years from now and be like "what was I thinking??" haha

I think either a ball gown or a super simple dress with not much character/details can be timeless. I went with a lace, strapless, corset back gown. Mine can probably be considered old lady 30 years from now but by then i feel like women will be wearing mini skirts and club wear. That's what's happening with proms so who knows lol.

I was just picking something lace and vintage looking that looked great on me Smiley smile

I envy people who have the personality to pull of trendy styles! My every day look is simple and elegant and doesn't scream look at me! But I wish I could try things that did! My dress is a vintage lace. Simple and yes elegant which I like to think makes it timeless and I have never felt more like a princess in my life! Do what makes you happy!

Haha Jessica P, I always say I'm not cool enough to be trendy. I stick to my preppy look and go-to cardigans Smiley smile

I didn't really think of what is in style when I picked a dress - I mostly went for what spoke to me. I think I generally gravitate to more simple elegance looks though. I like the couture look on other people, but it doesn't really suit my personality and it isn't something I would choose to wear. I don't really think there is any dress that will truly be timeless, but I think some shout louder than others what decade they were made in.

Well I personally didn't go for timeless. I went for strapless mermaid.

    IMO timeless would be A-line.
    no colour embellishments.
thin but not too thin straps.
carrying a small bouquet of roses
    with a elbow length veil.
    no tierra.

    that's my opinion

with Gina on this, my mom's was Aline. simple, but had sleeves. If it fit I would have worn it and had the sleeves removed.

that's kind of the point. I wonder if it's unavoidable to look back and wonder 'why did I do that?'. I picked a beautiful dress that I'll always think is beautiful, but by picked a dress that resembles a style that would be worn in a British royal wedding I wasn't wearing something fashionable. sometimes I wished I hadn't gone with such a 'safe' choice.

Don't get me wrong, I love the dress I wore then, but this time as I design my dress I hear that little voice inside me saying 'don't you want to go with something timeless so your pictures don't look dated?'

that's my current bridal 'crisis' I'm working through this week lol Smiley smile
