Do people really do this at receptions? Really?

Dollar Dash- Response from a DJ: The way I do it when I DJ a reception is to have the bride and groom go around with either baskets or pillow cases to all the guests. The premise is that whoever collects the most money gets control of the game controller or tv remote or Netflix for the first month of the marriage. You make it a contest and get the guests excited about it and involved. Most people really enjoy it over having a long drawn out dollar dance. The DJ needs to be involved though and really keep the action going. You make 3 times the money as a dollar dance.

Or this:

Our DJ suggested doing a dance raffle. We bought a bottle of vanilla vodka and a bottle of

Jack Daniels, then the DJ "sold" raffle tickets and randomly picked three guys and three girls (so we danced one full song with each), and then the third guy and girl "won" the booze. It was way less awkward and time consuming than a traditional dollar dance and we still made hundreds of dollars : ).

This is so tacky, cheesy, embarassing... there's a litany of adjectives that fit this idea, and none of them are positive.

This is one reason we chose a DJ who's not a traditional wedding DJ... we did not want someone who wanted to play games. There's SO little time at the reception for people to connect, and contrary to popular (media) belief, it's not ALL about the bride and groom - it's also about the guests, and there's nothing I can imagine more annoying for guests who've paid money to travel to your wedding, and bought you a gift, and just want to spend time celebrating with you, than to be forced to sit at their tables while the bride and groom play games that involved shaking you down for MORE money! Ugh!

In my family/social circle, we play games at bridal/baby showers, and that's about it.

My answer to this example is NO! Just NO!

Over 50% of the weddings I attend do not have DJs. I do remember one a few years ago, the wedding was in a southern university city, and the football team was playing an away game that night. The DJ wore a team t-shirt and made an announcement, every time there was a change in the score. I felt like I was at a pep rally.

Ugh, Nicole, I remember hearing that on WW about 99.5. I actually have also been to weddings that have had dollar dances...

Nope nope nope. Just respond to this DJ "please don't suggest either of these things to anyone ever again. Love, the WW community Smiley smile"

*slowly shakes head from side to side* No, just no...

I just cannot even fathom this. I would probably get up and walk out. I went to a wedding in April that had the dollar dance, halfway through the song, we left.

No and no. Thats kinda corny. For the record "traditional DJs" don't play games (shoe game, limbo) Traditional DJs play good music, make announcements and stay out of the way.

I had a couple where the bride was "kidnapped" and the groom had to ransom her back by hitting up the guests for ransom money. It was a total shocker to me when I couldn't find the bride (no one thought to tell the planner).

I went to a wedding where the DJ auctioned off the bride's garter. it sold for like $400. I don't mind dollar dances because its easy for guests to just not dance with the bride and groom, but the auction was a little weird for me.

ETA: I just remembered that the auction was not just for the garter. The winning bidder also got to dictate HOW the groom took the garter off. I would have been mortified.

I have only heard of the dollar dash from one unfortunate bride on WW who came here thinking it was a good idea. She was quickly told otherwise. It is worse than the dollar dance.

AHAHAHAHAHA! I just had a couple in my store the other day asking to break a twenty dollar bill into ones because they were going to a wedding and needed money for the dollar dance. I was so glad i was standing on the other side of the store, or else they would have seen the look of sheer horror on my face.

I really wouldn't doubt it. I've seen the dollar dance at every wedding I've been to. Won't be at mine!

I went to a wedding that did this. But it was in cowboy boots. This was after the bride invited me to two showers (both for gifts, one included to bring a recipe and an item to stock her pantry), a bachelorette party (bring her a gift), and there was NO BOOZE at her wedding. No....thanks.

BTW, I didn't go to anything but the wedding. One of my husband's friends.

@ A&J, I would probably have to hurt someone if on top of all of this it was dry!
